Trustee Election and
Library Budget Vote Results!

Thank you, Beacon City School District residents, for your support! On April 17th, the Library Budget Referendum and Trustee Election was held. The 2018-2019 Library Budget was approved!

Congratulations to our newly elected trustees Arabella Champaq -Droullard & Mark O'Malley! Both were elected to serve 5 year terms.
Beacon Open Studios Weekend
Saturday 12-5, Sunday 12-4

Artists all over the city will be opening up their studios this weekend for the 10th Annual Beacon Open Studios Weekend. The library is excited to be hosting an eclectic group of four artists this weekend as part of the event. Stop by to see the work of Jan Dolan, Cindy Gould, Lorraine LeClair, and Jean Noack. The group will be showing a variety or work including paintings, photography, printmaking and jewelry. Socrates Café
Tuesday, April 24th, 4-5pm

Join moderator Alan Goldsmith in a Socratic dialog that explores a philosophical, ethical, or socio-political issue using questions that probe underlying assumptions and statements. The goal is not to come out on top in an argument, but to arrive at a deeper appreciation for a subject's richness and complexity.

An Evening of Poetry with
Tony Pena
Tuesday, April 24th, 6:30-7:30pm

Join the Beacon Poet Laureate, Tony Pena, for an exciting evening of poetry. Mr. Pena will start the evening by reading selections of his work. The audience will then be free to read a poem by any favorite poet.

This special event for teens to adults is free and no registration is required. Light refreshments will be served. Not to be missed!
Poem in Your Pocket Day
Thursday, April 26th

April is National Poetry Month & April 26th is Poem in Your Pocket Day.

Coloring Books For Adults
Thursday, April 26th, 6-7:30pm

Some say that coloring is a new alternative to meditation. Come to unwind, while expressing your creativity! Adult coloring books offer a variety of designs, often intricate, just waiting to get lost in. Both colored pencils and fine tipped markers will be available, along with a wide variety of coloring books to choose pages from.
 
No registration needed. Stop by at any point between 6pm and 7:30pm.
International Film Night
Friday, April 27th, 7pm

Join us for International Film Night. This month's flm, Maudie, is from Canada. Based on a true story of an unlikely romance in which a reclusive man hires a fragile yet determined woman named Maud to be his housekeeper. A gem of a film set in Nova Scotia. Rated PG-13. 115 minutes.

Event is free and no registration required. All films shown in their original language with English subtitles (including films in English.) Doors open at 6:30 and film starts promptly at 7:00pm.

New York Skyscrapers
Tuesday, May 1st, 6-7:30pm

Join author, photographer, and lecturer, Kevin Woyce, for a fascinating and thoroughly entertaining Powerpoint presentation.

Using original photographs and historic images, Kevin Woyce tells the story of New York's greatest skyscrapers, from the 1890 New York World building to the Woolworth, Chrysler, and Empire State buildings. He will explain how and why they were built, and introduce the architects and businessmen whose visions shaped the world-famous skyline.
Youth Programs
Lego/Tech Club
Thursdays, 3:30-5pm

A place for elementary school-age children to work collaboratively or independently to build fantastic Lego creations and tinker with our STEM materials (littleBits, robots, etc.). You can even combine them!
 
Adults with younger children may build with Duplos/Legos in the children's area. This FREE program is a drop-in and does not require registration.

Fun with Science
3D Printer Meet & Greet
Friday, April 28th, 3-5pm

Are you curious about 3d printing? Stop by the library to check out the Library's new 3D printer in action. Ultimaker will be out on display near the front desk busy printing 3D objects. Library staff members will be on hand to answer your questions. We'll also have some 3D pens on hand to try out.

No registration needed.
Stop by anytime between 3-5pm to see the printer in action!

Tween & Teen Programs
Sketchbook Studio
Wednesday, April 25th 3-5pm

Stop by the Library the last Wednesday of every month for Sketchbook Open Studio.
SOS is an open space for middle school and high school students to work on sketchbooks, art journals, and other drawing projects. Monthly drawing prompts will also be available for inspiration. All kinds of art materials will be on hand to use during studio time. Bring your own sketchbook. All skill levels welcome.

High School Writing Lab
1st & 3rd Wednesdays, 3-4pm

Need help with college essays or other writing assignments? Starting on 4/18, high school students can stop by the Writing Lab after school on first and third Wednesdays. Facilitator, Jess Conway, an instructor at Teachers College, will be available to provide support, assistance, and encouragement for students in grades 9-12 at work on school or personal writing projects and college essays.

Sorry Anime Fans!  There will be no Anime Club in March and April. Stay tuned for updates about future anime screenings.
