Pennies for Life
This January, YC will be collecting "Pennies for Life." This is an initiative of the Harrisburg Diocese to commemorate the anniversary of Roe v. Wade by supporting the work of local pregnancy centers. Your donations will educate people on pro-life issues and counsel post-abortive women and men. Participants are asked to donate $1 for each year of their life in thanksgiving to God for the life He has given them, and to "give life" to another person. A baby bottle container will be placed in homerooms. Please give generously to the Pennies for Life this January.

YC Science & Engineering Fair

Set-Up

Students participating in this year's Science Fair should plan to stay after school on
Friday, January 11, from 3-3:30 PM. This includes all students who completed the Science Research & Writing course in Spring 2018 and Fall 2018 semesters. Students should bring their poster, paper, and lab notebook to school with them that morning and store it in room 218 for the day. Bus riders will need to arrange alternate transportation that day. Presenters should plan to attend the Science Fair on Sunday, January 13, from 11:30 AM-2:30 PM in full uniform.

Event
Approximately 20 students will be presenting science fair projects during the Open House on Sunday, January 13, from 12-2 PM. These students have been enrolled in the Science Research and Writing semester-long class. The purpose of this course is to provide support to honors students who are required to perform a science fair experiment. After performing individual and unique experiments, students present the data they collect over 16 weeks through a technical paper, visual poster, and verbal presentation. First place winners will proceed to the York County Science and Engineering Fair, which takes place at the Penn State-York campus in March. Topics range from the effect of exercise on emotional intelligence to the determination of the best camouflage in wooded environments. The Science and Engineering Fair is open to the public.

"Doing Good" in the Community
Our Chick-fil-A Leader Academy students were tasked with Do Good December projects.

On the afternoon of December 21, after school had been dismissed for Christmas break, Amillion Kearse, Tony Staub, Megan Hale, Brice Leady with his guitar, Abby Wurzbach, and Paige Gordon sang Christmas carols at the Children's Home of York.  Their audience was 10-15 teenage girls, instead of elementary children, so they pivoted quickly and got the girls, their peers, to engage.  It helped that Tony sang loudly - sometimes at the wrong time (and slightly off key). They asked for requests and even got the girls in enact the 12 Days of Christmas!

The DELIVER group (Grace Reed, Sarah Reed, Renee Bonner, Dylan Steigerwald, Bella Ebel) chose to bake a multitude of a cookies on December 23 and then volunteer December 26 at the Catholic Harvest Food Pantry where they delivered packages of cookies to all the families.  The evening was spent prepping, helping the families "shop," and then consolidating items that were left.

We'll hear more about the DRIVE group's used book drive later this month.
