Superintendent Search
Two candidates for the Superintendent position will visit Hartford Union High School (HUHS) January 8th, and 9th of 2019.
Each day one of the new candidates will
- Meet with members of the District Leadership Team
- Tour the District, which encompasses four public Associate School Districts (Hartford Joint 1; Herman, Neosho, Rubicon School District (HNR); Erin School District; and Holy Hill Area School District (HHASD), as well as several parochial Associate Schools (e.g., St. Kilian Catholic School, St. Gabriel Catholic School, and Peace Lutheran School)
- Meet with community members, parents/guardians, students, and staff in a community forum
- Have a second interview with the Board of Education
Community members, parent/guardians, staff and students are invited and encouraged to attend both of the community forums.

The BOE is excited to interview both candidates and encourages students, parents, staff and the community to do the same. The feedback from participants in the day's activities will be invaluable to the board. A feedback form will be available after the forums and will be shared with the board as they make their decision after the interviews.

I want people to draw their own conclusions, but I think that there will be evident personal traits, leadership styles, and the manner in which they conduct themselves that also need to be considered in determining the right fit for our district." 2018 DAILY NEWS ALL-COUNTY BOYS SOCCER TEAM
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Hartford Union's Michael Fullop
Goal-scoring on his mind from an early age.
Michael Fulop was frustrated. Mad, even. It was halftime of Hartford Union's Oct. 20 regional championship match against North Shore Conference rival Homestead.
Fulop collided with a Highlanders player as each went for a mid-air volley, bodies coming
together at various intersections, and then both came down
to the ground.
"I didn't feel anything in my knee originally, but when I tried to stand up, I could only limp," Fulop recalled. "I thought it was maybe just soreness."
As a brief test after being subbed off the pitch,he tried to pass a ball to the Orioles' trainer - no more than a few feet away - "and I couldn't even kick the ball," the senior said two months
after the incident, his voice pained by the recollection.
At halftime of the match, Fulop was diagnosed with a
Grade 2 tear in his medial collateral ligament.
It wasn't completely torn, but his season, and high school career, was over.
Hartford lost him and classmate Mitch Stroebel to injury that night, and then lost the match, 1-0, to a team it had dissected 6-0 just 16 days earlier.
"No, it wasn't" the way to go out, Fulop said, either for himself or his squad, which was 12-3-3. Fulop scored 29 goals, one short of league leader Will Navarre of Nicolet, and added
eight assists.
For his effort and production on the pitch, he was voted 2018 Daily News All-County Player of the Year by the Daily News staff and several county coaches.
"His confidence grew from his game," HartfordUnion coach Jack De Selm said, "and when he attacked the goal, you could see
from a coaching standpoint, it was relentless.
"'OK, here we go.' This year, he came into his own game."
Fulop led the team as a junior with 23 goals, and accrued 52 the past two years. Admittedly, he was backed by a veteran team whose primary goal was to get the ball to him or classmate Pablo Bustamante.
"I was just focused on putting balls in the back of the net," Fulop said. "Our offense was our strong point on the team, so if we could put more goals in than the other team, we win, right? That's what I was focused on."
Scoring has been Fulop's focus most of his career. He began playing as a 5-yearold, and tried baseball and basketball, all the while looking up to his big brother, Joseph. As Fulop got a little older, by the time he was 9 or so, he found soccer more appealing. Particularly the goal-scoring aspect, and the feeling he was naturally more athletic and faster than
others in his age group at the time.
While he was in the under-10 age range, his parents stuck him on Joseph's U12 team.
"My parents just decided to see only one game instead of two, I guess," he joked.
Fulop later joined a U11 club team and "I've been playing on the same team ever since with the same guys," he said. It's always been as a forward, save for a few games during U14 and U15 play where he played defense when kids were injured, or when he filled in at goalkeeper for half a season.
During practices sometimes when the Orioles play a game called "World Cup," he'll jump in between the pipes - "I like to play it, just not under a pressure standpoint," he joked.
But - especially when he reached high school - Fulop's primary objective was to score.
"His confidence grew as he got older. When
he had a bead on a goal, he attacked," De Selm said. "He continued to, I'll say, relentlessly attack, until he scored. He never quit, and was just tenacious. When he was in that mindset,
that frame of mind, there really wasn't anybody who was going to stop him."
And while his confidence and knowledge grew, so did his role - in some semblance. The Orioles relied on a handful of facilitators, Bustamante among them, so he wasn't asked to be much more than what was required. He wasn't incredibly vocal, so turning into a vocal leader wasn't necessarily in the cards.
Besides, he liked to be a role model by example.
"A lot of our players took that with them the last couple years," he said. "We do a lot of hyping each other up, getting momentum from that."
Plus, he couldn't exactly be a vocal leader on the field - forwards aren't
really interested in creating attention as they move upfield, he added, only maybe after the goal goes in. DeSelm noted whether he spoke or not over the past two seasons, opposing teams knew who he was.
"As soon as he stepped on the field, he was marked," De Selm said. "You'd have one person at the beginning of the year, and it wasn't very tight, and there are ways to shake that. A couple weeks later, it's two people on him and by the end of the year there are three people just trying to keep him from getting that first touch, much less scoring. Two guarding him, and one is trying to snuggle him."
Despite that, he managed to become the school's third-highest goal-scorer (57), with the bulk of work done in two seasons. And there is more to do. Rehab is continuous, and he is expected back in time for the spring season. Then, he'll train with his new team, Prairie State - a Division I junior college in Chicago Heights.
"The coach told me he tries to expose players to bigger D1 schools," Fulop said. "That's my plan - play, and see who's interested."

The All-County first team is made up of 11 players. Including Fulop, there are three forwards, three midfielders, three defenders and a goalkeeper on the first team.

Mikulec was selected to the All-NSC second team. He had four goals and four assists.
MIDFIELDER Pablo Bustamante, Hartford Union, Sr. (center)
Bustamante was named to the All-North Shore Conference first team. He had 14 goals and 10 assists.
GOALKEEPER Dominic Christensen, Hartford Union, Jr. (right)
Christensen posted 10 shutouts this season.

Junior Student & Parent Night will be held at the high school on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at 6:00pm in the Cafeteria.
Counselors will give a presentation that will cover course selection details to prepare for senior year, assessment dates, college and career readiness plans, and other information pertinent to junior students.
A panel of HUHS graduates will talk about their high school senior year and how they prepared for post-secondary plans. They will also talk about their experiences as they transitioned from a high school student to their college or career path.

HUHS Scholarship Foundation
Application Forms
The HUHS Scholarship Foundation application forms are available for seniors.
Scholarship information and application link:
Forms require both student and parent signatures, and are due no later than Friday, February 22, 2019 by 3:00 pm in the Counseling Office.
No applications will be taken after that date and time.
Board members from the HUHS Scholarship Foundation will be on hand on Wednesday, January 23rd and Tuesday January 29th to answer any questions you may have about the Scholarship Foundation application process. If you wish to stop in, they will be in the District Office Conference Room (across from the small gym) from 2:00-3:00 both days.

ACT Work Keys Test Date Change
Juniors will take the regular ACT at HUHS on Wednesday, February 20 as part of the statewide administration; however, the administration date for the ACT Work Keys has changed: juniors will take the ACT Work Keys exam on Wednesday, March 13.
The ACT exam days can be stressful and trying. We are moving the ACT Work Keys exam to March so that students do not have two testing days back-to-back. Our goal is to have juniors rested and rejuvenated for both exams.
In addition, DPI will be including both the ACT exam and the Work Keys exam as part of the annual School Report Card score. It is important that students are focused and ready to do their very best on both exams.

College Application Tip
Save the speech. Tell the tale. No need to stress out about the college application essay or be nervous if you think of it as a conversation or a story about yourself. You aren't giving a speech to thousands of people but someone in the Admissions Office who really wants to hear it! The essay is a story that means something to you and if you are able to convey that meaning to Admissions, you've done the job.
Seniors can talk to their English teachers for assistance or keep in mind there are peers available in the Writing Center in the LMC during Flex.
Junior Parent/Student Night
Mark your calendar!! Counselors will be holding a Junior Parent/Student Night presentation on Wednesday, January 9, at 6:00pm. Look for more information about this presentation in December.
Badger Boys/Girls State Program
Does your student have an interest in government and citizenship? Do they display qualities of leadership, good moral character, cooperativeness, dependability, and participate in co-curricular activities? Consider the Badger Boys or Girls State Program in June 2019. It's an exciting week of meeting new students, staying on a college campus, and experiencing dorm life. There's campaigning, pep rallies, State Fair, talent shows, recreational programs, music, discussion sessions, sports, etc. It's a sponsored event, so there's no cost to the participants. More information will be available in January.
Requirements: Student must be in the top half of his or her class; be a US Citizen; and able to participate in the entire week of activities.

Tuesdays at HUHS are Career FLEXploration day
Tuesdays at HUHS are Career FLEXploration day. Local businesses come in during our FLEX/lunch time and set up near the cafeteria. Students can talk with business reps about the education, training, and soft skills necessary to succeed in the workplace. Many businesses have job opportunities available and will participate in Youth Apprenticeship.

Health Services
The Health Room is located in the Attendance Office and is staffed Monday through Friday from 6:45 a.m. until 3:15 p.m during the school year.
Please, remind your student that they always need to come to the Health Room with any health concerns and to not call, e-mail or text home to leave school. The Health Technician will always call the parent or emergency contact to arrange for the student to leave school when ill.
If a student talks, e-mails or texts their parent on their own and then they leave school without contacting a staff member and receiving a permit to leave, they are considered truant from school.

ACT Testing

All students considering a two or four-year college experience are reminded to take the ACT test during their junior year. Students can register for the ACT at
www.actstudent.org. When registering, students will need the HUHS school code, which is 500-850. Please remember to check the website to see if the college(s) your son or daughter is considering requires or recommends the ACT writing test. The test fee for the ACT is $50.50 and the ACT with writing is $67.00. If you feel you cannot afford the test fee, please ask your child's counselor if you are eligible for a fee waiver.
HUHS is an ACT test center for all testing dates (except February 9). The test dates for the 2018-2019 school year are:
October 27, 2018 December 8, 2018 February 9, 2019 April 13, 2019 June 8, 2019 July 13, 2019
Note: Please keep in mind all juniors are required by state law to take the ACT at the high school on February 20 (no cost to the student on February 20). When considering whether or not to sign up to take the February 9 or April 13 ACT, it may be best for students to take the February 20 test, then decide whether or not to retake the test in June or July based upon February results.

Congratulations to Jalen Spuhler for winning the Oshkosh On The Water Tournament December 29th.
Swimming
As we watched the first 3 events, it became obvious that Grafton had stacked the first 1/3 of the meet. So, even though we saw the score difference grow to 16-30 after the 200 IM, we knew of holes in their line up that we were set to take advantage of. The turn around began with Adam Marx's win over Trevor Bodart and Nick Neuman's quick 3rd in the 50 Free. This was quickly followed by Bobby Klockow's win over Trevor with Evan Staton's close 3rd and Jacob Mularski's 4th in the 100 Fly. Dylan Webb's 1st (.09 seconds off the pool record!) and Logan DeBack's 2nd in the 100 FR brought the score within two points. After the 500, with Bobby's close 2nd to Nick Starr (fastest 500 swimmer in the Northshore Conference), the teams were tied. A sweep of 1st & 2nd in the 200 Free Relay, 2nd & 3rd in 100 Back (Adam & Quinn Worman), and a full sweep of 1st, 2nd, 3rd in Breast (Dylan, Tate Stoeckmann, Nick Neuman) increased the lead to 20 points. Even with many of our swimmers placed in off events, it was a lead that the stacked Grafton 400 relay could not overcome. The Oriowl relays took 2nd & 3rd to seal the meet win at 93-67.

New This Year - Clubs & Activities Online Registration
Starting for the 2018-19 school year, all students wishing to participate in activities, clubs or sports will need to complete the Online Forms through Skyward Family/Student access.
All steps need to be marked as completed including step #8 "SUBMIT SY19 ATHLETIC/CO-CURRICULAR FORMS". Online Forms only need to be completed once per school year, so if a student participates in a sport as well as a club or activity the Online Forms only need to complete once.
If the student is only participating in an activity or club but will not be participating in a sport, they may mark step 3 complete and do not need to have a Physical Clearance Form completed by their Physician.
Once the online forms have been completed, the student will then need to pick up an "Orange Card" from the Co-Curricular Office clearing them to participate in their activity or club. Activity/Club organizers will inform students of this change at the first sign up meeting and collect the orange cards before the next regularly scheduled meeting.
