Tara Donovan: Fieldwork celebrates American artist Tara Donovan’s distinct and varied practice, which includes sculpture, drawings, works on paper, and site-responsive installations. Often known for her transformation of neutral or mundane materials into elaborate, mind-bending objects that evoke the natural world or other organic material, Donovan’s work in many ways is about work. She manipulates a material over and over again, to see what it is capable of becoming, where it might lead, and how it will migrate from an object of practical use to something surreal or sublime. In some instances, she reworks a material into both two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms, engaging with space and light in nuanced and unexpected ways.

Thru Feb 3 | 10:00 am - 6 pm | Denver Art Museum | Gen. Adm.
Eyes On: Julie Buffalohead will showcase new work by the Minnesota-based artist, who is a citizen of the Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma. Buffalohead uses metaphors, iconography, and storytelling narratives in her artwork to describe emotional and subversive American Indian cultural experiences, and often analyzes the commercialization of American Indian cultures.
Buffalohead frequently includes animals as subjects, and her eclectic palette and whimsical subjects evoke a childlike innocence. While she works in a variety of mediums, including painting, printmaking, drawing, illustration, bookmaking, and sculpture, this exhibition will feature a new series of works on canvas that explore her own life experiences, as well as ancestral knowledge.

Thru Feb 16 | 1 pm - 4 pm | Niza Knoll Gallery LLC
As our nation’s leadership shifts its environmental priorities from protection to exploitation, it is critical, now more than ever, for citizens to appreciate and explore the treasured landscapes that have inspired inhabitants of our continent for centuries. To that end, artist Topher Straus chose to use the vast National Park system, established 150 years ago, as a blueprint for his unconventional representational landscapes featured in a new exhibit at Niza Knoll Gallery entitled “The Parks”.
Straus highlights popular vistas through spectacular 30” x 60” paintings on metal with the goal of providing a personal and rich experience for the viewer, much like when visiting the parks themselves. The show runs January 11 through February 16, 2019 at 915 Santa Fe Drive with the public invited to view and purchase work at an Artist’s reception during the Third Friday Art Walk on January 18, 5-8 pm and during regular gallery Winter hours, Wednesday through Saturday 1-4 pm, First and Third Friday 4-8 pm and by appointment.

Thru Mar 3 | 10:00 am - 6 pm | Denver Art Museum | Gen. Adm.

A selection of 150 couture dresses, as well as accessories, costume jewelry, photographs, drawings, runway videos, and other archival material, will trace the history of the iconic haute couture fashion house, its founder, Christian Dior, and the subsequent artistic directors who carried Dior's vision into the 21st century.

Stampede creates an opportunity for visitors to discover and consider the role animals play through themes such as personal connections with animals, how animal materials have been used in art, how animals are used to tell stories or represent political ideas, and how artists use animals in imaginative ways. It includes visitor favorites such as a four-faced Hamat's Mask, Deborah Butterfield’s horse sculptures, artworks by Frederic Remington and Georgia O’Keeffe, as well as rarely seen works.

Thru Aug 16 | 10:00 am - 6 pm | CU South Denver | Gen. Adm.

There's a place from which nothing escapes, not even light, where time and space literally come to end. It's at this point, inside this fantastic riddle, that black holes exert their sway over the cosmos … and our imaginations.
In this Museum-produced show, zip through other-worldly wormholes, experience the creation of the Milky Way Galaxy, and witness the violent death of a star and subsequent birth of a black hole. Mathematical equations, cutting-edge science, and Einstein's theories fill in holes along the way, providing the most complete picture yet on this mysterious phenomenon. Can you feel the pull?

Thru Dec 31 | 10:00 am - 6 pm | Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center | Gen. Adm.
The art works presented in three galleries highlight some of the most celebrated work by indigenous and Latina/o artists in the FAC’s permanent collection. Within an overall chronological flow, the galleries focus on three periods of time spanning over 150 years: mid-19thcentury, 1930s, and late 20th century to the present. This exhibition explores individual stylistic movements, artists, and topics such as colonial encounters, art markets, and creative innovation, among other subjects. Art works in these galleries will be periodically rotated in an effort to feature a wide range of artworks from the FAC’s extensive collection.

Ever since New York native ARIES SPEARS was 14 years old, he has been a force to be reckoned with on the comedy scene. His quick wit, charisma and ferociously aggressive style of comedy have earned him critical acclaim, high accolades, and above all, a busy schedule. With eight years as a principle player on the popular sketch show, “Mad TV,” ARIES is now starring with iconoclastic Damon Wayans in a brand-new show on Showtime called “THE UNDERGROUND”, a half-hour sketch comedy series to premiere on the network September 14th.
Referring to the riotous, groundbreaking ’90s sketch comedy show that launched careers for him, his siblings, Wayans says of “THE UNDERGROUND.” “It’s ‘In Living Color’ on steroids…it will be everything we weren’t allowed to do on broadcast television.” Dean Lorey (“My Wife and Kids”) directs Wayans and fellow writer/ensemble cast members, including Groundlings players Edi Patterson and Mikey Day (“Nick Cannon Presents Wild ‘N Out”), and Damon Wayans Jr., among others. While the show features recurring sketch characters, parodies of pop culture and a new generation of sketch performers alongside Damon, it also features more sketches filmed outside the studio along with an eclectic mix of dance, music, and other visual arts used as interstitial moments. There are also some fly-on-the-wall glimpses into behind-the-scenes moments showing how this show is put together and how the sketches develop.
ARIES has also found great success in the world of feature films. At the age of 17, after being spotted in a comedy club, Aries landed a part in the movie “Home of Angels” which also starred Abe Vigoda and Sherman Helmsley. He then appeared in “OUT OF SYNC,” and portrayed Red Foxx in Warner Brothers’ “WHY DO FOOLS FALL IN LOVE.” In addition, he starred alongside John Leguizamo in TriStar’s “THE PEST” and delivered his most notable performance to date as Cuba Gooding Jr’s brother in Columbia’s blockbuster hit “JERRY MAGUIRE” directed by Cameron Crowe. Last year, Aries was featured in the film “JIMINY GLICK IN LALAWOOD.” The movie also starred Martin Short and Janeane Garafolo. In the movie, Aries was able to show off his impressive improv abilities, as the movie was nearly all improvisation.

Stand-up comedian and actor Ari Shaffir describes his comedy as a puppet show, but way filthier and without the puppets.
Most recently, Shaffir released two Netflix specials called Double Negative, which is presented in two 45-minute episodes – Children and Adulthood. Self-described as his version of a “Smashing Pumpkins Double Album,” this type of double header release hasn’t been seen since George Carlin’s 1972 release of FM & AM.
Shaffir created and hosted the storytelling show, This Is Not Happening, which aired on Comedy Central for three seasons. He recently co-starred in Twentieth Century Fox’s comedy Keeping Up With The Joneses. In addition, Shaffir hosts the wildly popular podcast, Skeptic Tank, a weekly interview show that is consistently among the top-rated podcasts on iTunes and averages over 100,000 downloads per week. Shaffir is also an avid sports fan and gets together with Sam Tripoli and Jayson Thibault once a week to record the Punch Drunk Podcast.

The Dinner Detective eschews campy costumes and plots for an exciting evening of food-accompanied mystery and paranoia, where actors hide among the diners, playing innocent and making everyone a potential suspect. To solve the crime, guests freely interrogate one another, chivvying out clues about the murderer and determining who has a bloodthirsty look in their eyes. Between dramatic deaths and simulated police involvement, guests dig into four-course meals, washed down with bottomless iced tea, coffee, and drinks from the cash bar. The diner who comes closest to solving the mystery through their snooping goes home with a prize basket to show off to their friends or split with the murderer as per their shadowy conspiracy. Prop guns and gunshot sound effects may be used during the performance.

Rock of Ages is a jukebox musical built around classic rock songs from the 1980s, especially from the famous glam metal bands of that decade. The musical features songs from Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Steve Perry, Poison and Europe, among other well-known rock bands. It was written by Chris D'Arienzo, directed by Kristin Hanggiand choreographed by Kelly Devine with music supervision, arrangements and orchestrations by Ethan Popp.
During the performance, the performers frequently break the "fourth wall", directly addressing the audience and seemingly forgetting (or perhaps reminding the audience) that they are actors in a musical. Despite the musical's title, the Def Leppard song of the same name is not included in the musical.

Nestled in the Catskills—1962’s land of dirty dancing and Borscht Belt comedy—an inconspicuous bungalow colony catered to a very special clientele: heterosexual men who delighted in dressing and acting as women. These white-collar professionals would discreetly escape their families to spend the weekends safely inhabiting their chosen female alter-egos. But given the opportunity to share their secret lives with the world, the members of this sorority had to decide whether the freedom gained by openness was worth the risk of personal ruin. Based on real events and infused with Fierstein’s (La Cage aux Folles, Newsies and Kinky Boots) trademark wit, this moving, insightful, and delightfully entertaining work offers a glimpse into the lives of a group of “self-made women” as they search for acceptance and happiness in their very own Garden of Eden.

Which one of them will get to own the truth? In this “whip-smart satire of fear and loathing” (New York Times)—a 2016 Pulitzer Prize finalist—MacArthur “Genius” Branden Jacobs-Jenkins skewers the cutthroat, opportunistic culture of modern media.
