Stratford Hosts Local Business Leaders
|
Today, Stratford Middle School hosted the Carol Stream Chamber of Commerce's Industrial Round Table, which is comprised dozens of local business and manufacturing leaders from our community. The 12 officials on hand today were in awe of Stratford's STEM Lab and Innovation Center, which they toured and observed students using.
We're working to build partnerships with the Round Table companies so our students can have opportunities to learn from real-world business officials in their local communities. Stay tuned for more info on our partnerships. |

Heritage Lakes Students Empower Peers Through Class Project
|
Students in the Magnet program at Heritage Lakes recently took on an innovative project that helped their peers in Specialized Academic Classrooms (SAC) open pathways to improved communication and learning opportunities with their teachers.
Many of the students in the SAC classrooms experience vision or hearing difficulties. To help overcome these obstacles, students work with the school's speech pathologist, Kim Kearney, to learn to utilize tactile symbols, small handheld objects representative of a word or concept experienced through touch, for essential language needs. However, SAC classroom teachers, Jessica Harrison and Christina Morley, also saw the need for tactile symbols to be developed for students to read their daily schedule to help them navigate their day.
That's where the 4th and 5th graders in the school's Magnet program came in.
During their Problem Based Learning (PBL) time, they were challenged to brainstorm, develop, design, create, and sometimes redesign tactile symbols representing different aspects of the daily schedule for their peers.
Working in pairs during their PBL times throughout the course of a month, students in the Magnet program thought through what the tactile symbol that they were assigned should look and feel like, paying special attention to size, color, shape, and imagery. They then used 3D modeling software Tinkercad to design models of their assigned tactile symbol to be printed using the school's 3D printer.
The project required the students in the Magnet program to think critically, evaluate, problem-solve, and take on the perspective of their peers. In the end, they developed symbols that Mrs. Morley and Mrs. Harrison use daily with their students to help them to better know what to expect for the day's schedule. Special thanks to Magnet teachers Kristin Mitchell, Laura Gehrke, and Leslie Boston for guiding the students throughout the project, and to Innovation Media Specialist Helen Bibler for advising students on their 3D printing designs. Do you have a child who will be entering kindergarten next school year or know anyone who does? CCSD93 will hold Kindergarten Registration for the 2019-20 school year on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at 6:30 p.m.
Registration will take place at all CCSD93 elementary schools. To enter kindergarten in the fall of 2019, children must be five years old on or before September 1, 2019.

Want Your Child to be Bilingual? Learn About CCSD93's Dual Language Program 1/31, 2/6 & 2/26
|
CCSD93 will again offer its Dual Language program for interested incoming kindergarten students for the 2019-20 school year. Dual Language classrooms contain half English speaking students and half Spanish speaking students, and they are taught lessons in both English and Spanish. The goal is for these students to become fluent in both languages, which will be a great skill for them to have as our society becomes more and more global.

You're Invited to GBN Indian Student Association Production on 1/25 & 1/26
|
Tonight (1/25) and tomorrow, (1/26) at 7 p.m. both nights, Glenbard North High School's Indian Student Association will be hosting its show, Our Kahani.
The performance will showcase the diversity of the Indian subcontinent through the forms of dance, song, fashion, and acting. It's one of the largest and most spectacular cultural shows in the state of Illinois, and it features many former CCSD93 students!

1/24 Board of Education Meeting Recap

The most recent Board of Education meeting was Thursday, January 24 at Carol Stream School.
The following occurred at the meeting.
- Carol Stream Elementary School kindergarten through 5th grade students demonstrated math skills using the new Eureka Math curriculum at stations throughout the school's Innovation Center. Here's a collage of photos from the stations!
- There were two revised Board Policies for first reading:
- 105 - Mission Statement
- 625 - Curriculum Content
- There was one new Board Policy for first reading:
- 630 - Accelerated Placement
- Associate Superintendent Dr. David Hill gave a presentation on the Tax Levy process.
- The Board reviewed results of the final Fiscal Year 2018 Financial Audit.
- The Board reviewed results of CCSD93's 2018 Demographic Study.
