It's been an exciting and very productive start to the year for our staff and Board. Key events included our Annual Youth Fine Arts Show at the Madaras Gallery, Board Annual Meeting, Craft Creation Day lead by friend of the kids Cindy Robertson, Youth of the Year Competition and the Cholla Golf Tournament put on by the wonderful Tim and Diane Meyer.
We are also making preparations for our new STEM Center of Innovation Opening on March 9th at the Holmes Tuttle Clubhouse funded by a joint partnership between Raytheon and Boys & Girls Clubs of America and heading up to Phoenix to cheer on our Citywide BGCT Youth of the Year Bahati Jackson on March 27th. I hope you can all join us for this special opening and the YOTY competition.

Sam Fox, CEO and Founder of Fox Restaurant Concepts Named Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson 2018 Click for Kids Award Recipient
Created in 2009, the Click for Kids Award is the highest recognition and expression of gratitude bestowed upon a supporter of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson. The award recognizes an individual, a couple, or an organization that has made a substantial impact on Club Members over a significant period of time. The award was created in honor of long-time friend, mentor and supporter of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson, Jim Click.
The 2018 Click for Kids Award recipient Sam Fox, exemplifies what it means to be a supporter of the Clubs in the same way he has innovated the restaurant industry by raising the bar high in both business and philanthropy. Since 1998, Mr. Fox has been a champion for young people, always giving back and encouraging others in the community to do the same. Fox Restaurant Concepts has hosted numerous dinners, participated in many events, and even fed Club Members and their Families. His leadership comes in the form of providing a world-class experience, whether it's inside one of his restaurants or through his philanthropic partnerships.
"While there is no way we can ever repay Sam Fox and Fox Restaurant Concepts (FRC) for their extraordinary generosity," Mr. Click stated as he announced the award recipient at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson Annual Board Member Award Banquet on Monday, January 29th at Culinary Dropout, "it is an honor to recognize Sam and FRC with the Click for Kids Award bestowed by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson!"
In announcing the award, Click reminisced about the early days of the Clubs in Tucson and the privilege of working with so many generous and civic-minded community leaders to build what today comprises of six Clubhouses serving over 7,000 of Tucson's disadvantaged youth. "It has been an honor to work with you all to make Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson the best Boys & Girls Clubs in America!" He also added that, "Sam is a true treasure and that he was honored to make the announcement of this much deserved accolade." Adding to Mr. Click's announcement, BGCT CEO Debbie Wagner stated, "Sam's contribution to the Clubs through his generous support has forever impacted our organization and our community. We are truly grateful and cannot be more proud to recognize him with this prestigious award."

Mary and Rusty Garrett Named 2018 Youth Impact Award Recipients
The Youth Impact Award was created in 2016 to annually recognize one individual, couple, or organization that has made a consequential impact on Club kids through an innovative programmatic enhancement.
We are excited to announce that the 2018 Youth Impact Award recipients are Mary and Rusty Garrett. Mary and Rusty exemplify what it means to create impact and opportunities for our youth. Not only are they Emeritus Board Members but they have also been contributors to the Clubs since 1995,
they have offered longstanding support of the Frank & Edith Morton Clubhouse and the Russell D. Garrett Gym, that that has given our youth access to and the opportunity to engage in physical activities and sports leagues, which has literally changed lives.
Spanning 22 years of service to our youth, the Garretts have also provided more than $700,000 to fund facility expansion, operations and enrichment, and athletic programs for nearly 50,000 individual members. There are not many couples who have done as much to impact the lives of the youth who have the least and need the most. In addition to financial support, Mary and Rusty support our kids with their time and passion.

Bahati Jackson named 2018 Mark Irvin City of Tucson Youth of the Year
Youth of the Year has become America's premier leadership and recognition program for teen Club Members. This nationally recognized program has a real impact on developing great futures for young people. Through an application and interview process, "Youth of the Year" candidates are selected by a local panel of esteemed judges based on leadership qualities, service to the community, academic achievement, letters of recommendation, obstacles overcome, written essays, poise, and public speaking.
Each of our six Clubhouses select Boy and Girl Youth of the Year Winners annually and we award scholarships to assist them in their academic pursuits. One candidate each year is identified by a panel of judges to represent the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson in the State of Arizona Competition in Phoenix every April. Our 2018 "Mark Irvin City of Tucson" Youth of the Year is Bahati Jackson of the Steve Daru Clubhouse.

Bahati Jackson, known as Jackson, has been an active member at the Steve Daru Clubhouse in Tucson for the past two years. He plans to attend the University of Arizona after graduating from Tucson High Magnet School in May 2018. He aspires to become an aerospace engineer and one day an astronaut. He helps others daily through his service at the Clubhouse and by working to help provide for his family of 5 here in the United States.
Originally from Rwanda, Jackson has adapted to American life quite well, learning English quickly and graduating high school in only three years. He has become an important part of the Steve Daru Clubhouse through participating as a Rookie Basketball Coach, Vice President of the Keystone club, as well as a very positive role model for his peers and fellow Club Members. He truly appreciates his personal role model and mentor, Program Director and Steve Daru Clubhouse Alumni Marsharne Flannigan. Jackson will compete for the State of Arizona Youth of the Year on March 27th in Phoenix.

Tucson Local Media Announces Women of Influence "Future Leader Award" Scholarship Recipient as BGCT Club Member and Past Clubhouse YOTY, Destiny Delgado

Each year Inside Tucson Business sets out to celebrate Tucson's Women of Influence. A big part of that is looking to the future and our future is the young people of our community. Inside Tuscon Business created the Future Leaders Award to recognize two female high school seniors who see themselves as becoming influential women. The winners are awarded a $1000 scholarship and are presented the award at the Annual Women of Influence event.
We are excited to announce and congratulate Destiny Delgado of the Holmes Tuttle Clubhouse for being selected as one of the 2018 recipients.Thank you to Tucson Local Media for its support of this remarkable young lady! Join us to celebrate Destiny at the Women of Influence Dinner.
As a student, Destiny has several Honors classes, holds a 4.4 Weighted GPA and is a member of the school's basketball team. At the Club, she has participated in many activities and programs including being Vice President of Keystone, was named All-Star Junior Leader by staff and participated in the Clubhouse Internship Academy Program during the 2016-17 academic year. She is a great role-model to the younger students and always goes above and beyond to help the staff. Destiny has successfully completed an internship with a local doctor and participated in science discovery camp during the summer of 2017. Destiny plans on attending Stanford University and becoming a Doctor.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson Unveils New "Center of Innovaiton"
Funded through a $5 million grant from Raytheon Company, the Center is designed to inspire children to explore science, technology, engineering, and math fields
Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson will open a Center of Innovation on Friday, March 9, 2018 at its Holmes Tuttle Clubhouse with support from Raytheon, a defense and cybersecurity leader. The center was created to provide children of military families with an inspiring environment in which they can explore the practical application of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
This center is one of 11 in the U.S. and Germany that is part of Raytheon's $10 million pledge to support military families and veterans. The Center of Innovation at Holmes Tuttle Clubhouse will provide military connected youth access to advanced technologies to stimulate creative approaches to STEM exploration.
A full-time STEM expert will offer individual and group support, using real-world applications to help Youth Program participants develop their STEM skills and critical thinking.
"We're proud to offer safe, familiar places for our area's military youth to forge the friendships, principles and passions that will ultimately impact their future," said Debbie Wagner, Chief Executive Officer for Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson. "With this new Center of Innovation from Raytheon at our Holmes Tuttle Clubhouse location, we'll be able to help build even more confidence and curiosity among our kids and teens, whether they ultimately decide to pursue a career in STEM or explore another interest area."
Pam Erickson, Raytheon's Vice President of Global Branding and Citizenship said: "Military families go where they are needed, when they are needed. Raytheon's goal is to provide their children with an environment to foster their creative and learning passions. Supporting military families is our responsibility; inspiring the military child is our privilege."
"I'm excited to participate in the Center of Innovation," said Elizabeth Romero, Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson's Holmes Tuttle Clubhouse Youth of the Year. "I've always had a curiosity in science, technology, math and engineering, and now I can explore these fields in-depth at my Boys & Girls Club."
On Friday, March 9 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm the Holmes Tuttle Clubhouse (2585 East 36th Street, Tucson, Ariz. 85713) will host a Center of Innovation grand opening event and ribbon cutting ceremony. Activities at the event will include DIY Build Your Own Comet and Build Your Own Comet exercises along with a chance to test creativity on a 3D printer. Additionally, several Raytheon representatives will be onsite leading a Squishy Circuits activity that involves conductive and insulating play dough to teach the basics of electrical circuits.

UnitedHealthcare to Donate Hasbro's NERF ENERGY Game Kits to Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson
On Wednesday, March 7th, 150 Steve Daru Club Members will receive NERF ENERGY Game Kits, gaining access to a limited-release game that aims to reduce youth obesity through "exergaming"
This initiative, a collaboration between Hasbro and UnitedHealthcare, is part of a nationwide program with the Boys & Girls Clubs to encourage greater physical activity among youth and fight the national epidemic of childhood obesity.
Nationwide, approximately 17 percent of children and adolescents ages two to 19 are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In Arizona, nearly 37 percent of children are considered obese. (America's Health Rankings)
The NERF ENERGY Game Kits are designed to encourage physical activity among children in a fun and playful way with rewards, called "exergaming." As children participate in physical activity, they earn "energy points" that are tracked by the activity band, and these points turn into screen time to play the mobile game on a smartphone or tablet.

DEK Hockey Coming to Frank & Edith Clubhouse Campus
DEK hockey is simply Hockey in your sneakers and played in state-of-the-art outdoor rinks. DEK gives kids and adults access to newly constructed, outdoor hockey rinks with an opportunity to learn and play DEK hockey year-round. DEK Hockey is one of the fastest growing sports in North America. Hockey's main barrier to entry for youth and their families is its cost (ice, equipment, availability, travel, etc.), however with DEK, anyone can participate with just gym shoes, shin guards and a stick.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson at the Frank & Edith Morton Clubhouse and Doolen Middle School Campus is excited to announce it will receive Tucson's first DEK Hockey rink through the ambitious and generous partnership and cooperation of Arizona Coyotes, Tucson Roadrunners and KuKaZi (DEK Hockey initiative founder, architect and development partner), who along with professional and amateur Hockey's upper echelon launched the national youth sports initiative EMPowerPlay, (EMP = Educate, Motivate and Participate). The partnership is working across the U.S. with city parks/rec departments, youth organizations (Boys and Girls Clubs, The Y, etc.), volunteer companies, Fortune 500's and citizens to offer youth an opportunity to learn and play the great sport of Hockey.

Through donations like yours, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson is able to serve more than 8,000 youth in Tucson through access to 6 clubhouses, quality programing, homework help, a caring staff and a safe place to go after school.
