Guidance Lesson Recap:
This month's lesson focused on the lifeskill of
common sense in having good judgment
in every day life. From listening to directions to solving problems on your own, there are
many different ways one can use common sense in their life.
Grade K: We read the book
Terrible, Awful, Horrible Manners
by Beth Bracken. The
story was about a monkey that acted in a way that did not use good judgment or common
sense. In the story, he did not use manners and etiquette when eating with his family. The
tables turned when his parents decided to act in a similar way and he realized the
importance of using common sense and manners in every day life. As a class, we talked
about ways we need to use good judgment at school with our actions every day.
Grades 1/2: We read the book
Lola's Rules on Friendship
by Jenna McCarthy. The story
emphasized many different ways in which we use our judgment and common sense to
treat each other. From compromising to sharing, we discussed many ways we use
common sense to treat each other kindly at school.
Grade 3: We read the story
No Slurping, No Burping A Tale of Table Manners
by
Lorelay Bove. The story was about a father who struggled with showing the best manners
at the dinner table with his family. From slurping his soup to yelling across the table, the
silly story emphasized how proper manners and good judgment in all situations is
important. As a class, we talked about positive ways to use good judgment throughout the
school day and at home with family.
Grades 4/5: We continued to pilot the
Be Kind Program
in learning about inclusiveness
this month.
Grades 6-8: As a class, we discussed how to use common sense and our own judgment in
every day life. From thinking before we act or using our manners, we discussed many
ways to use common sense. We also discussed how organization and study skills are
important in using good judgment to be successful in school. Students completed an
activity that taught them the structure and tips of taking good notes during a lecture.
Students had the chance then to review their own note taking skills and ways to improve
them. Lastly, students had the opportunity to organize their binders/lockers to stay on top
of their study skill routine.
