REV. STEPHANIE PRICE
Preaching at UMCE at Both Services
Sunday,  January 27

We will welcome Rev. Stephanie Price to the pulpit on January 27 at both services. Rev. Stephanie is a former associate pastor at our church, and is now the founding and developing pastor of "The Land", a fresh expression of what a worshipping community can be. The Land is a faith community that nourishes sacred relationships between Creator and all of Creation through food, faith and farming. They have about ten acres in Aurora, Colorado. They meet on Saturday mornings at their amphitheater worship, and host special retreats and activities. They have an edible labyrinth which is also a community garden, along with plans for other development. They are in partnership with Regis University and a variety of non-profits for spiritual, educational and community uses at the site.

ALL CHURCH MEETING PACKETS

Information packets from the All Church Meeting are available in the church office and the narthex. Thank you to everyone who participated on January 22.

NEW PRAYER CANDLE TABLE DURING WORSHIP
at Both Services

We are offering a new element in our worship experience--a table of prayer candles.  During our opening hymn, anyone wishing to lift up a quiet, private prayer by lighting a candle may do so.  Simply come forward, light one of the lighting sticks from the central candle, use it to light a votive candle and silently offer your prayer.   When you are finished lighting your candle you may pass your light to another person or extinguish it in the sand.  Please stay as long as you like.  If you wish to have Rev. Deb or Rev. Joyce pray with you, you may share your prayer with one of them.  We hope you will enjoy yet another way to offer your prayers.

OFFICE MANAGER JOB OPENING

The following is an announcement from the UMCE Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC):

Carol Wood, who has served as our church office manager for approximately the past 3 years, has informed us that she will be leaving that position in late January/early February.  Over the course of her time as office manager, Carol has shown amazing love and support for our church members and staff.  She will be greatly missed in this role.  SPRC is currently working to advertise and hire for the office manager position.  Details can be found on our church website,  www.evergreenumc.org.  SPRC will be sure to provide updates to the church community on the hiring of a new office manager.  Thanks for your understanding and support.

MINISTRY JOTTINGS BY PASTOR DEB

Sabbath Oxygen

"There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from their own work, just as God did." -- Hebrews 4:9-10

Some years ago, a research physician made an extensive study of the amount of oxygen a working person needs throughout the day. He was able to demonstrate that the average working person breathes thirty ounces of oxygen during a day's work, but they use thirty-one. At the close of the day they are one ounce short, and their body is tired.

When they go to sleep, they breathe in more oxygen than they use to sleep. So, by the morning, they have regained five-sixths of the ounce they were short. By the seventh day, they are one whole ounce in debt and thus, should rest an entire day to replenish their body's oxygen requirements. {The same research found it takes a 24 hour period of rest to replenish this missing ounce.}

Work six days & rest the seventh day. Sound familiar? The God who created us not only invites us to rest. God created our bodies in such a fashion that they demand rest. Most people think that "keeping the Sabbath" is solely an act of devotion to God. Yet the truth of it is keeping a day of Sabbath rest can provide true rest in every area of our life - spirit, soul and body. God is not only our daily strength. God is our source of rest, recreation and replenishment.

In Christ's Grace,
Pastor Deb

GUATEMALA MISSION TRIP
June 28 - July 7, 2019

The UMCE Missions Team recently hosted Joanna Cook from the Church of the Hills who discussed a mission opportunity she and her church have been supporting for several years.  We thought this mission would be a wonderful chance for our UMCE congregation to also join in participating, personally or as a family mission.  Although the deadline for registration this year is a bit tight, we want to share the following introduction from Joanna:

The Pura Vida Ministries English Camp with which I'm involved takes place in Guatemala for a week (June 28 - July 7, 2019) in the Quiché province/state of Guatemala, working among the Mayan population.  The students are from 4th grade to 9th grade and they learn English in school but usually don't have a  teacher who is fluent in English.  The kids are great and so eager to learn how to improve their fluency and their pronunciation.  We work on vocabulary and grammar, but use games and songs a lot to make the learning more fun.  It is a week of immersion for these students!

Pura Vida is not officially linked to any denomination; however, lay pastors of the Guatemala Methodist Church are on their staff and Pura Vida works closely with the John Wesley School that was founded by the Guatemala Methodist Church.  We invite any interested persons to participate in the English Camp, no matter what their church affiliation is -- so far we've had Methodists, Presbyterians, Episcopalians, etc.

For any questions, contact Michael Eaton (720.348.9857) or Joanna Cook (303.588.4137).
