Medical Fact
 "I didn't know that!

In 1872,  Julia Ward Howe, a pacifist, suffragette, and writer of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic," first suggests Mother's Day in the United States. She suggests the day as a day mothers could rally for peace and for several years, she held an annual Mother's Day meeting in Boston.

What is HSG And How Can It Help? HSG
Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is a procedure used to diagnose certain problems of the uterus and fallopian tubes. HSG most often is used to see if a woman's tubes are partly or fully blocked.

Why Is HSG Done?
With HSG, the doctor can check for blockage or growths inside the uterus and tubes. This may help your doctor find the cause of infertility or repeated pregnancy loss (also called repeated miscarriage). HSG also is performed to detect growths or scarring inside the uterus or problems in its size or shape.

Sometimes, HSG is used a few months after sterilization procedures, such as Essure Sterilization, to make sure that the fallopian tubes have been completely blocked.

What to Expect
HSG is done in a special X-ray area in the hospital, clinic or doctor's office. It is best to have HSG during the first half (days 1 to 14) of a woman's menstrual cycle.

The Procedure
For HSG, a special fluid is placed into the uterus and tubes. The fluid shows up in contrast to these structures on an X-ray screen. This highlights their inner size and shape.

After the Procedure
Many women have minor side effects after having HSG. These are not serious and go away after a day or two in most cases. Side effects may include:
  1. Sticky vaginal discharge as some of the fluid drains out of the uterus
  2. Cramps
  3. Feeling dizzy, faint or sick to your stomach
  4. Slight vaginal bleeding
Patient's who undergo HSG are advised not to use a tampon.

Risks and Complications
Severe problems are rare. They may include an allergic reaction to the fluid, injury to the uterus, or pelvic infection. If you experience any of the following, you should reach out to your doctor:
  1. Vomiting
  2. Fainting
  3. Severe abdominal pain or cramping
  4. Heavy vaginal bleeding
  5. Fever or chills
Test Results
Your doctor will discuss the results of your HSG with you. Based on the results, further tests may be needed.

Finally...
HSG is a way to diagnose problems of the uterus and fallopian tubes, or verify that the tubes have been blocked after sterilization. The risk of problems after HSG is low, but you should be aware of warning signs.

National Blood Pressure Month - How Much Salt Do We Really Need?salt
Salt is necessary for our bodies to function -
mini-pizza-spatula.jpg
yet how much salt do we really need and how much is excess?

A recent article in CNN's Health section brings attention to the average American diet and the abundance of salt intake.

"According to the American Heart Association, our bodies need only a small amount of sodium -- less than 500 milligrams per day, about the equivalent of the sodi um in a half-cup of chicken broth -- in order to function properly. Yet most of us consume about seven times that: more than 3,400 milligrams of daily sodium, the equivalent of more than 1.5 teaspoons of salt per day, or the amount in almost four tablespoons of regular soy sauce.

The most recent  US government dietary guidelines recommend that all individuals limit sodium intake to 2,300 milligrams per day, or the amount in about one teaspoon of salt.  A limit of 1,500 milligrams per day is no longer recommended for high-risk groups including those with heart disease, kidney disease and diabetes,  according to a recent report  from the Institute of Medicine, as "evidence of both benefit and harm is not strong enough to indicate these subgroups be treated differently from the general US population," explained committee chairman Dr. Brian Strom.

The more  recently published Circulation study  found a progressive decline in cardiovascular disease events among those with lowered sodium levels -- even as low as 1,500 milligrams. In fact, the American Heart Association still recommends a limit of no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day for most adults."

Much of the blame for an increase in sodium consumption is on the food manufactures that add an excess of salt in processed foods and take-out options. This average American diet could detriment our  cardiovascular health and put us at more risk for disease. "Research also suggests that too much salt can  negatively affect bone health  in young girls and postmenopausal women."

Just like most things in life, salt intake should be in moderation. Try to reduce sodium by preparing more foods at home, asking for restaurants to reduce the salt in your meal and avoiding processed foods.

Healthy Living:  National Bike Month Healthyliving
National Bike Month is here! Established in 1956, National Bike Month gives you a great excuse to grab your bikes and head outdoors.
family_bikes_garden.jpg
Cycling is mostly aerobic -  it gets your heart, blood vessels and lungs working to help  improve your cardiovascular fitness.

There are many additional benefits to bike riding for both kids and adults:
  • Exercise stimulates your brain. Biking especially can help kids focus.
  • Older adults that have joint or knee pain can help improve their condition with biking on a regular basis, as it helps circulation and muscle movement.
  • A recent study in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise spent five years looking at the activity of 1,500 subjects. Those who were active on a daily basis were 31-percent less likely to develop high blood pressure.
  • Biking can help with weight lose goals - when exercising regularly, biking can burn extra stored fat.
  • Biking, and exercise in general, can help you gain confidence and feel better about yourself with the release of endorphins.
  • Biking is a feel-good activity, especially when done with others

If you are taking your bike out for the first time this year, make a safety check to ensure the brakes work well, tires are pumped and the frame has no loose parts.
