2018 Tax Laws
At the end of 2017, the new tax laws went into effect. We caught up with Jim Malczewski, partner with Baker Tilly Virchow Krause,LLP, to learn what has changed and how those changes will affect your philanthropic giving.

State tax deductions: When you look at itemized deductions historically, it's likely that your biggest deduction was your state income and property taxes. Until now there was no upper limit to the amount for this deduction, but under this new law the maximum deduction you will receive for income and property taxes will be $10,000. High income earners (ex. $500,000) who pay significant state income and home property taxes will no longer get a deduction for anything beyond the $10,000 limit. Read more
Philanthropic Snapshot - Designated Funds
Designated Funds provide long-term support for a specific organization you care deeply about. Designated Funds are best suited for donors who:
  • Are passionate about a particular charitable organization
  • Believe third-party oversight is necessary to ensure their gift is used as directed
  • Want to make an endowed gift to a new, small or struggling charitable organization that does not have extensive investment management experience
The Love of Animals Fund, a designated fund with the Foundation, was established with the reminder of Jeanette Rieckman's estate in 2016. The Fund supports the welfare of any abused or sickly animals and includes any veterinarian's care especially in Winnebago County. The Foundation takes responsibility in ensuring the public and local shelter and veterinarian community knows this fund exists.

Riverside Park Ice Rink
Thanks to a group of private funders and collaboration between the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation, the city, the Best Western Premier Waterfront Hotel & Convention Center and the Oshkosh Convention & Visitors Bureau, Oshkosh has a brand new outdoor ice rink. The rink, located behind the Convention Center at 2 N. Main Street, is open 17 hours a day, seven days a week. Enjoy the rink before spring arrives!
