FFA Donates to Baraboo Food Pantry
During FFA week, the Baraboo FFA held a "Kiss the Calf" event in which students put money in containers. Each container represented a different Baraboo High school staff member. The staff member with the most money won and kissed a calf during the FFA assembly.

The FFA raised $200 with this event, then matched the amount to donate a total of $400 to the Baraboo Food Pantry.

FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education classes at the Baraboo School District. We are #Barabooproud of these students and their efforts to donate to the food pantry!

4K Schedules Make Up Days
Dear BELC (4K) Parents and Guardians:

The Baraboo School District includes two additional 4K days of instruction within our annual calendar.  Due to school cancellations, early dismissals, and late starts this year, the District needs to add more days to the 4K calendar to meet required Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction instructional minutes for the 2017-18 school year. It is important to us that we give families as much time as possible to accommodate these additional days into personal calendars. So, please mark your calendar for your child to attend 4K on Wednesday, April 30th.

It is important to note that we may need to add more 4K days if there are additional school cancellations or delays due to inclement weather.  Also, the 4K calendar operates under a different set of rules compared to our K-12 classrooms with regard to instructional minutes. Thank you for your flexibility with these changes and please do not hesitate to contact me if any questions should arise.

Yours in Education,

Dr. Chris Olson, BELC/West Principal

In order to best support our numerous volunteers, we are offering volunteer training at West School (707 Center St.) on March 22 from 4:00-5:00 PM.  School volunteers from any of our schools are welcome to attend either of these trainings to better understand the role and dynamics of a school volunteer along with receiving some information about school district volunteer expectations.

The volunteer training is optional to any school district volunteers on either date.  Any and all volunteers at any of our schools are welcome to attend a district-wide school volunteer appreciation event at West School (707 Center St.) on May 17 from 4:00-5:00 PM.  Thank you to our many school volunteers and community partners for all of the many ways that they support and impact each of our Baraboo schools.

All sessions will be the same. It is only necessary to attend one. This is open to children as well.

Teacher of the Year Nominations
The School District of Baraboo has announced the opening of nominations for the Excellence in Education Award (EIEA) and the Distinguished Elementary Teacher Award (DETA) programs for the 2017-'18 school year.  The EIEA award is sponsored by the BHS Graduating Class of 1956 and the DETA award is sponsored by Mr. Andrew Hauge.  The Class of 1956 and Mr. Hauge have established endowment funds with the Greater Sauk County Community Foundation for the purpose of financing all costs associated with the award programs.  The purpose of the award programs is to recognize and honor outstanding teachers in the Baraboo School District who have distinguished themselves as exemplary teachers and who have demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and dedication to the young people of the Baraboo community.  The recipients of these annual awards will be announced near the end of the current school year at  special award ceremonies.

The recipients of the awards, who will be chosen by a five-member selection committee of retired teachers, community members and school district officials, will receive a framed honorary certificate and a stipend to be used for a professional development or educational enrichment activity which will enhance the teacher's knowledge, skills and classroom effectiveness.  In addition, the winning teacher's name for the EIEA, which is given to a secondary teacher in the Baraboo School District, will be engraved on a large bronze plaque which hangs in the Media Center of Baraboo High School.  The plaque is inscribed with a tribute to the former teachers of the Class of '56 who, "taught, guided and inspired" them during their years at Baraboo Junior High and Baraboo Senior High School.

To be eligible for these awards a teacher must be:
  • Licensed and certified by the State of Wisconsin
  • Employed as a full-time teacher by the District
  • Planning to return as a full-time teacher in this District for the next school year
The Selection Committee will judge candidates based on the following criteria:
  • Mastery of sound classroom instructional skills
  • Use of initiative, creativity and innovation in teaching techniques
  • Motivational and leadership skills with students and colleagues
  • Involvement in school organizations and activities
  • Involvement in professional organizations, seminars and continuing education
  • Positive relationships with superiors, colleagues, students and parents
The School District is now seeking nominations for the Excellence in Education Award (middle school and high school educators)  and the Distinguished Elementary Teacher Award for 2017.  Nominations may be made by a teacher colleague, an administrator, a parent of a student or a current or former student.  Nomination forms may be obtained on the District's website: www.baraboo.k12.wi.us or at any district school building.  Submitting a nomination will also require that the nominator write a letter in support of the nominee.  Guidelines for writing such a letter will be included with the nomination form.  Nomination forms must be received at East Elementary School 815 Sixth Street, Baraboo, WI, 53913 by Friday, March 9, 2018, to be valid.
