NRH Fire Department Earns Class 1 Rating

The NRH Fire Department has been given a Class 1 rating from the Insurance Services Office. The Class 1 Public Protection Classification rating is the highest score a fire department can receive. The rating takes into consideration the following areas:
  1. Operations, training, and deployment which includes fire apparatus, equipment testing, training and the ability of the department to place adequate personnel on the scene of a building fire.
  2. Emergency communications, which evaluates the ability to receive the call for assistance, process the information and alert responding staff, along with the department's ability to receive the alarm with redundant communications capability.
  3. The water system, which includes the ability of the system to provide adequate water at the correct volume and pressure while maintaining accurate records of the flows and pressure.
Congratulations to all of our North Richland Hills Fire Department personnel, as well as Public Safety Communications / Dispatch and the Public Works Utility Division, for this achievement. The Class 1 rating was announced at the January 14 City Council Meeting. You can view the presentation on the city's website.

Ride TEXRail for Free Through January 31

The new TEXRail commuter rail service is off to an impressive start with more than 55,000 passengers since service began on January 10. You can give TEXRail a try for free, with all fares being waived through January 31.  The 27-mile rail line runs from downtown Fort Worth to North Richland Hills, downtown Grapevine, and DFW International Airport Terminal B. TEXRail stations in North Richland Hills are located at:
  • Iron Horse Station, 6531 Iron Horse Blvd.
  • Smithfield Station, 6420 Smithfield Rd.
TEXRail trains run hourly and operate 365 days a year. You can view the schedule: https://ridetrinitymetro.org/texrail/schedules/Each train has 229 seats. There is a designated quiet car, level boarding, on-board bike racks, USB charging stations, seatback trays and overhead luggage storage.

Up to 18-hour parking is available at the TEXRail stations in North Richland Hills, so if you work a night shift or a double shift, or plan a day trip, you will be able to park in the TEXRail station lot. If you are planning to be out of town for two or more days, you should get a ride to the station and use the easy drop-off lanes. The issue regarding long term parking is that if the rail station lots fill up with travelers who are gone days or weeks at a time, then there will not be enough space for daily commuters to park. Options for long term parking are being explored and could be added at a later date.

Starting February 1, train fares will be $2.50 for a single ride or $5 for day pass. You can purchase tickets before boarding at a ticket vending machine on the train platform. Reduced fares are also available. For more information, please visit the Trinity Metro website at  https://ridetrinitymetro.org/fares or call  817-215-8600.
NRH Development Activity Update

Development activity has been at record levels around North Richland Hills the last couple of years and shows no signs of stopping in 2019.  At the January 14 City Council meeting, development plans were approved in all areas of the city from south of Loop 820 to the northern tip at Precinct Line and Davis Boulevard.

Plans for North Richland Hills' first microbrewery were approved as Brutal Beerworks received a special use permit for a microbrewery (a.k.a. brew pub) at 8401 Boulevard 26.

The first phase of development at City Point was approved. City Point is the area around the new City Hall that will one day be a mixed use development. The first phase will be a multifamily development known as "26 @ City Point" to be constructed by AG Spanos Multi-Family Communities on the 10 acres west of City Hall. The remaining land is in the design stage for a mix of uses including retail, restaurants and office space.

The City Council also approved zoning for an independent senior-living community and future commercial uses on 16.83-acres on the west side of Davis Boulevard at the intersection of Precinct Line Road.

Property Tax Deadline is January 31

Don't forget, January 31, 2019 is the last day to pay 2018 property taxes to avoid penalty and interest. Property tax payments should be made to the Tarrant County Tax Office.

The average NRH homeowner will pay $1,076 in city property taxes for 2018. Just over half of your city property taxes goes to public safety including 24-hour police, fire and EMS services. Around 21% goes to street maintenance and traffic systems and 14% to city facilities, with the remaining 14% going to Neighborhood Services, the library, parks and other services.  You can learn more about your city taxes and the services they fund at  www.nrhtx.com/taxes

The city property tax makes up only 22% of your overall tax bill. The rest goes to the school district, county, county college and county hospital district. Please visit www.nrhtx.com/taxes
