I am extremely proud to share with our school community that Oak Ridge High School has recently been named a National Magnet School of Distinction by Magnet Schools of America, the national association for magnet and theme-based schools. On behalf of Oak Ridge, I will proudly accept the National Magnet School of Distinction Merit Award at a special awards ceremony to be held at the Magnet Schools of America's 37th National Conference in Baltimore during April. Way to go Oak Ridge - we are proud to be Pioneers!

Rigor in the Classroom
Rigorous instruction as part of "Rocket Day"

The new Sally Ride Elementary School on Wednesday, August 1, 2018. The new school was named to commemorate Dr. Ride as the first woman in space. (Credit: Orlando Sentinel.)

Friday, January 18th was our first Rocket Day with the new Sally Ride Elementary School. We had an exciting day hosting third, fourth and fifth graders for their annual Rocket Day activities including, an Hour of Code, flight time on our Aviation Lab simulators, and rocket launches from our football field (please see pictures below). Rigorous instruction at its best, hands-on, interactive and activities that demonstrate levels of thinking and the complexity to which the learned knowledge is applied! This was a wonderful experience for many of our students and a great opportunity for young students to visit our campus and experience Oak Ridge hospitality.

Athletics

Boys Varsity Basketball

Congratulations to Niven Glover #2, Emmanuel Adedoyin #3, Kaleb Coleman #24, and Christopher (CJ) Walker #45, for their nominations to play in the McDonald's All American Game. Out of 22 nominees in the state of Florida, four are from Oak Ridge! The McDonald's All American Team is the best-known of the American high-school basketball All American teams. Designation as a McDonald's All American instantly brands a player as one of the top high-school players in the United States or Canada.

One of our AP students recently met Val Demings, United States Congresswoman representing Florida's 10th congressional district.  Her name is Doraneli Parras and she said, "As a student who is representing Oak Ridge High School for the MLK Humanitarian Award, I had the honor to meet Val Demings at the Interfaith Prayer Service on January 13. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet U.S. Representative Demings and also to be a representative for the upcoming events during the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr."
