JG Consulting Hired to Conduct Superintendent Search

After hearing presentations, asking questions, reviewing materials, and doing due diligence on five superintendent search firms, the Board announced its selection of JG Consulting with Escalante & Associates ("JG Consulting"). James Guerra and Mike Escalante bring years of experience in recruiting and placing superintendents both nationally and in California, and as a former administrator in high performing Southern California school districts, Mr. Escalante understands the unique needs of the SMUSD.

On Tuesday, February 12, the search firm will interview individual Board members about their expectations for the new superintendent. During that evening's School Board meeting at 7:30 p.m., there will be a presentation and discussion in Open Session about search procedures, recruitment, the screening and interviewing process, and developing a timeline for the superintendent search, including future stakeholder and community-related meetings.

District Receives a Clean Opinion from Auditor for 2017-2018 Financial Report

An independent audit of the SMUSD 2017-2018 financial results by CliftonLarsonAllen resulted in an unqualified opinion with no adjustments needed.  In moving to approve the audit report, Board member Corey Barberie thanked Mrs. Julie Boucher and her staff for their diligent work noting that, because of his work in the financial accounting field, he recognized the accomplishment of receiving a clean audit report with a small accounting staff.

Board Approves the Creation of a Facilities Advisory Committee (FAC)

The Board approved the creation of an advisory committee to review, evaluate and report to the Board on the District's facilities needs, deferred maintenance needs, and safety and security enhancements, as well as financing options. This FAC will include teachers, students, parents, and community members who bring special expertise in areas of construction, design, management, finance, and legal/compliance matters. Information about how to apply and to serve on the FAC will be coming in February.
