Apartment complex takes shape on Maple Ave in Elmira
CDS Housing's new affordable housing community in Elmira for seniors and people with developmental disabilities is more than halfway completed. AIM is a partner in the project.
Contractors install shingles on the roof of the apartment complex.
Construction on a new affordable housing community for seniors and people with disabilities on Maple Avenue in Elmira is more than halfway finished, and the project is expected to be completed in October.

The developer is CDS Housing, located in the Rochester area. AIM Independent Living Center is a partner in the project.

There will be 40 one-bedroom apartments for income-qualifying seniors age 55 and older, with preference given to veterans.

Amenities will include a community room, fitness center, computer lab and laundry room. There will be on-site activities and entertainment, and public transportation will be accessible via the Chemung County Transit System.

There will also be 10 one-bedroom apartments reserved for people with intellectual and development disabilities of any age to live independently, and AIM will have staff on site to provide support services for these residents.

As of the end of April, the project was about 55 percent done, said Ray Wetherbee, director of housing development at CDS. Contractors have been finishing the roof to make the building watertight, and installing "rough-in" mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, Wetherbee said.

The contractors still have more work to do inside the apartments, such as wiring, drywall and finish work.

CDS will begin accepting applications in June. To inquire about residency, contact Cathy Maiorano at Landsman Real Estate Services, (585) 427-7570.

The project is backed by New York State Homes and Community Renewal and the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities.
