Apartment complex takes shape on Maple Ave in Elmira

Construction on a new affordable housing community for seniors and people with disabilities on Maple Avenue in Elmira is more than halfway finished, and the project is expected to be completed in October.
The developer is CDS Housing, located in the Rochester area. AIM Independent Living Center is a partner in the project.
There will be 40 one-bedroom apartments for income-qualifying seniors age 55 and older, with preference given to veterans.
Amenities will include a community room, fitness center, computer lab and laundry room. There will be on-site activities and entertainment, and public transportation will be accessible via the Chemung County Transit System.
There will also be 10 one-bedroom apartments reserved for people with intellectual and development disabilities of any age to live independently, and AIM will have staff on site to provide support services for these residents.
As of the end of April, the project was about 55 percent done, said Ray Wetherbee, director of housing development at CDS. Contractors have been finishing the roof to make the building watertight, and installing "rough-in" mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, Wetherbee said.
The contractors still have more work to do inside the apartments, such as wiring, drywall and finish work.

A field of 23 teams and 92 players braved a few May showers and raised more than $12,000 in Sunday's fourth annual AIM Golf Tournament at Elmira Country Club.
The team of Bob Gramuglia, Nicholas Gramuglia, Christian Gramuglia and Corey Marshall took first place in the captain-and-crew tourney with 14-under-par score of 58.
Andy Zick drew the winning ticket after the tournament and took The Million Dollar Shot, sponsored by Perry & Carroll Insurance, but came up just a bit short.
Proceeds support AIM's programs and services for people with disabilities.

AIM to host Spring Fling dance party for young adults with developmental disabilities

AIM will host Spring Fling, a dance party for young adults with developmental disabilities, from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, May 11 at the Elmira AIM office, 350 W. Church St.
There will be a DJ and a fun photo booth, along with pizza, snacks and refreshments.
Spring Fling is open to people age 14 and older who live at home and have eligibility for services with the NYS Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). The cost is $3. The event is partly funded by OPWDD Family Support Services.

Grover named Employee of the Month

Chad Grover is AIM's Employee of the Month for May.
Grover is a receptionist at AIM's Corning office, directing callers and visitors to the appropriate program or staff member.
He is one of AIM's longest-tenured employees, having been hired in January 1997 - more than 21 years ago.
He received multiple nominations from AIM staff, with one stating that he is "respectful, humorous and a pleasure to work with."
"Chad is AIM!" another person wrote.
Congrats, Chad.
Also, AIM added several new employees recently.
Geetha Louisnathan is a service coordinator in our Nursing Home Transition and Diversion (NHTD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Medicaid waiver programs.
Gabrielle McCarty is a Medicaid service coordinator for people with developmental disabilities.
