"Say only the good things people need to hear, but only such as is good for needed edification, that it may impart grace to those who hear" (Ephesians 4:29).

Dear Christ Our King and Savior Parish Family,

As many of you saw in the news this past week, students from an all-boys Catholic school in Kentucky were blasted for allegedly taunting and impeding a Native American man who on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial at the March for Life in Washington, DC.

Photos and video clips emerged of a young man indeed smirking as a Native American beat a drum. The media went wild accusing this boy and his classmates of racism and bigotry. In this social media age in which we live, it did not take long before his face was on every major news network and commentators (even his own diocese) were distancing themselves from his "inappropriate behavior". Because of the coverage and the statements such anger and hatred for these boys caused the school to be closed from bomb and shooting threats. Employers of the students' parents were receiving calls to have them (the parents) fired from their jobs for raising "racist children".

There was only one problem...as ALWAYS, there was another side to the story, revealing that events did not occur the way the media had presented them.

If you care to, watch the videos and make an informed decision for yourself as to who was in the wrong here; that's not the point of this article.

Rather, I want to remind us all of the serious nature of sins against 8th Commandment--"Do not bear false witness against your neighbor."

There are two principal ways we can sin against the 8th Commandment: Detraction and Calumny. Detraction is the unjust violation of the good reputation of another by revealing something  true  about another person. Calumny (which includes slander and libel) is the unjust violation of the good reputation of another by imputing things about a person that are  false .

People have a right to a good reputation, even people with whom we might disagree. The intentional unjust tarnishing of someone's reputation, whether we are right or wrong about the perceived error, is always wrong, and can even constitute a mortal sin.

The old "think before you speak" is truly virtuous advice, especially in this day and age, when lies and "fake news" spread faster than a California wildfire. Is what I'm about to say true? Is it necessary? Will it be spoken in charity?

If we can't definitively answer those three questions in the affirmative, it would be better to keep our mouths shut. Only in practicing this virtue and repenting when we fail in it will we ever loose the desire to relish in the rotten sweetness of gossip and backstabbing.

Peace in Christ,
Fr. Michael Silloway
Parish Administrator

Stewardship Scripture Reflection
Third Sunday of Ordinary Time

The U.S. bishops' pastoral on stewardship reinforces today's reading from 1 Corinthians: "Because its individual members do collectively make up the Body of Christ, that body's health and well-being are the responsibility of the members - the personal responsibility of each one of us. We all are stewards of the Church."

COKAS CUP GOLF TOURNAMENT
APRIL 15, 2019

The “Giving Back to the Community” Golf Tournament held by Christ Our King and Savior Church is set for April 15, 2019 at Harbor Club on Lake Oconee. The 18 hole tournament is a scramble format. Players will be competing for the COKAS Cup Challenge sponsored by BankSouth.

Last year’s golf tournament raised over $32,200 for Community Outreach Programs for Greene, Putnam, and Hancock Counties. Plans are underway for an exciting and fun day of golf at Harbor Club with the opportunity to win valuable prizes.

We are looking for single, doubles, and foursome ladies, men and couples golfers. The tournament committee will be glad to assign golfers to teams. For details and registration, go on-line to cokas.org. or call Mark Holihan (770) 403-5702.

Sponsors are also needed. For as little as $200, a sign with the family name will be placed on the various holes, just like in the Masters tournament. Please consider being a valued sponsor as well.
