NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS

ARTIST SEES CHANGE IN BLACK AND WHITE
January 13, 2020, The New Haven Independent, by Brian Slattery- "In the lens of  Marjorie Wolfe's camera, the wind roils air and water together, driving the clouds through the sky and whipping up peaked waves into foamy surf. Her image captures the moment forever. But if she'd come back the next day - or even a few hours before or after - maybe it wouldn't be there at all.  That's one of the ideas behind "Sepiessa Point," Wolfe's show at  Kehler Liddell Gallery  in Westville that runs through Feb. 9 with an opening reception Jan. 12..." "Riotously elaborated watercolor sets. Animated creatures bursting from their frames. Cars balanced on their heads. In their first show at  Kehler Liddell Gallery in Westville, the gallery's new members each display, in their own way, a taste for the playful. The new members' show runs through Feb. 9. The playfulness starts with Lisa Toto's work - and particularly the watercolor sets that she has turned into mixed-media pieces that live somewhere between sculpture and collage. The individual pieces' topics are serious. Student Movement addresses the general movement among high-school students in the United States against gun violence thanks to the organizing that happened after the Parkland shooting." EDGEWOOD CYCLETRACK DELAYED AGAIN
January 9, 2020, The New Haven Independent, by Thomas Green- "The city will soon go out to bid, again, for the long-planned and years-delayed Edgewood Cycletrack. Now the soonest cyclists can expect to ride the separated lane will be this summer.  City transit chief Doug Hausladen and City Engineer Giovanni Zinn told  the Independent that the 2.1-mile protected cycletrack that will stretch from Forest Road to Park Street hit another round of hiccups when  no contractors responded to the citys advertisement for prospective builders back in June.   Hausladen said that a number of reasons could explain why the city received no applications for the $1.2 million state-funded project last summer..." CALL TO ARTISTS FOR GROUP SHOW @KLG
"I Am ..." - 4th Annual Juried Show - Open Call to Artists. How do you see yourself? How do others see you? What makes you, you? From selfies to personal branding to the complexities of identity politics, our carefully crafted personas are routinely broadcast to the world via the internet. The modern world revels in the revelation of a semblance of self, allowing us to conceal as much as we reveal. In this age of unprecedented exposure, how can an artist offer some fresh statement of self? While navigating the boundaries between the social and the private self, how do you publicly express something real and authentic? We invite you to share some aspect of the true you, whether through a traditional version of self portraiture or some other, less conventional window to your soul. We want to know you and see you as you see yourself. We welcome any media or form of self expression in your expression of self, anticipating that this collection of selves, of I AM, will become a powerful, revelatory voice of WE ARE. DEADLINE TO SUBMIT: Sunday, March 15th by 11;59pm. FULL DETAILS HERE

MARJORIE GLLETTE WOLFE, SEPIESSA POINT @KEHLER LIDDELL GALLERY

Kehler Liddell Gallery presents: Sepiessa Point, by photographer Marjorie Gillette Wolfe.

Marjorie Gillette Wolfe has been visiting Martha's Vineyard since she was a little girl. Originally from New Haven, Wolfe continues to visit the Vineyard - sometimes as many as 10 times in a year - and found Sepiessa Point in a hiking guidebook some twenty years ago. Sepiessa Point Reservation borders Tisbury Great Pond, and the pond is contained in part by a barrier beach. The beach is periodically opened to the Atlantic for the health of the ecosystem. Wolfe's collection of nearly thirty photographs were all taken within a couple of acres - some even from the exact same vantage point - and paint a picture of Sepiessa throughout the seasons, during different weather and times of day.  "It works in a magical way for me," says Wolfe. "Every time I go there, it's different." Though some of the works have been shown individually, and some are brand new, they have never been shown as a cohesive collection, creating a retrospective of sorts, of the place, as well as the artist's connection to it.  marjoriewolfe.net
