The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents approved Thursday, Jan. 17, a new master's degree for Texas A&M University-Kingsville. They also authorized the degree be sent to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for the final approval.

The new master's degree approved is environmental systems management which will reside in the agriculture, agribusiness and environmental sciences department in the Dick and Mary Lewis Kleberg College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The College of Business Administration will be a partner for this degree. The proposed implementation date for the new program is fall 2019.

Environmental Systems Management
Environmental science courses have been offered at both the undergraduate and graduate level as elective courses since 2012 and enrollment has grown over that time. The enrollment data, coupled with increasing national demand for trained environmental scientists who can evaluate the economic aspects of the environment as an integrated system, indicate that the time is right for this advanced degree.

The environmental systems management degree has become a necessity for the two colleges as environmental sustainability has become the management objective for every conceivable habitat or ecological community.

The proposed degree incorporates business management and systems thinking principles and practices as a core facet of the discipline in the curriculum which makes this master's program unique among environmental sciences programs offered by any other university of college in Texas.

Based on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and Texas Career Check, environmental jobs will be among the top 10 fastest growing jobs through 2026.

Students Evaluate Commercial Loans
Local bank provides course projects for finance students

During the fall 2018 semester, students in the Finance 4334 Bank Management class worked with the Bank of South Texas to evaluate a commercial loan request for a bank customer.

The students were divided into three groups. Each group worked on a different project. The first group worked on a loan request for the purchase of a ranch. The second group worked on a loan request for purchase of heavy equipment for the company's new construction division. The third group worked on a loan request to purchase a vacant land to build a residential apartment complex. All the groups had to analyze the financials of the companies and recommend what would be the loan term, and pricing of the loan. Additionally, they also had to identify the collateral, guarantor and the sources of repayment. The students analyzed the financial data, presented their findings and made recommendations to the bank's loan committee.

The College of Business would like to thank to Mr. Darryl Lemke for this opportunity.
