Message from the Commodore
James Gubelmann

Dear 12mR Friends,

On behalf of the 12 Metre Yacht Club I wish you a Happy New Year! It is with great anticipation that we look forward to a spectacular summer of 12mR racing at Newport including the 2019 12 Metre World Championship and NYYC 175th Anniversary Regatta.

The growing list of participating Vintage, Traditional, Modern and Grand Prix 12s reads like a roll call of Olympic and America's Cup history. This auspicious fleet, crewed by an international who's-who of racing sailors, will represent Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Norway and the United States. You will find the current competitors' list here.

It is with equal measure of excitement and gratitude that I announce contributions from two private foundations that have joined us in support of the 2019 12 Metre World Championship. The Pitt Foundation has donated $25,000 in general support of our 2019 events and the Vetlesen Foundation, of Norwegian heritage, has granted $50,000 to assist with the expenses of the Baltic fleet 12s coming to Newport for the Worlds. The Vetlesen family was the original owner of Vema III (N-11).

Thanks to our 12MYC media and fundraising specialist, Chris Meigher, our 12mR Worlds bars will be stocked with Stella Artois and Chateau d'Esclans wines including Whispering Angel rose'. Chris is finalizing many other partnerships AND he has offered deeply discounted advertising rates to our supporters in the July 2019 issue of QUEST magazine, which will include the official 12mR Worlds programme. See details below.

Finally, to welcome our International 12mR compatriots to the 12 Metre Yacht Club, we have sent each 12mR owner / skipper an embroidered blazer patch to enhance their dress mess jackets while in Newport. (Additional patches will be soon available through our website.)

The 2019 12 Metre World Championship, now just 166 days away!

Sincerely,
James Gubelmann

2019 12 Metre World Championship,  joining sailing royalty from around the globe for the largest-ever gathering of 12 Metres in the U.S. Scheduled for July 8-13 in Newport, R.I. the 12 Metre Worlds is hosted by Ida Lewis Yacht Club , the  International Twelve Metre Association (ITMA) America's Fleet and the  12 Metre Yacht Club and takes place on the same waters where the America's Cup was held in 12 Metres from 1958 to 1983, adding further historical significance to this fleet racing competition planned for two dozen teams representing seven countries in four divisions.

Grael, winner of five Olympic medals (two golds and two bronzes in Star class and one silver in Soling class) will skipper Italian Patrizio Bertelli's KA-12 Kookaburra II in the seven-boat Grand Prix Division while Bertelli's second boat, US-12 Nyala,

"I am looking forward to some action in these beautiful and historical boats and to sailing them in a special place like Newport," said Grael, whose past 12 Metre experience includes winning the 1999 12 Metre Worlds in Saint Tropez with KZ-7 Kiwi Magic (also competing in the Grand Prix Division) and sailing Nyala in the America's Cup Jubilee in Cowes in 2001.

And while Grael adds relevant 12 Metre experience to his accomplishment of being one of the most successful sailors in Olympic history, he nevertheless has enormous respect for Bank's sailing accomplishments. "I know Jesper well; we have sailed Solings against each other on many occasions. He is a great sailor."...read more

Charlie Morgan's Heritage: 1970

by Stephen Lirakis, 12MYC Historian
Williams _ Manchester Shipyard 1970
Williams & Manchester Shipyard, Heritage's 1970 home
1970 was a very active year for me. After returning from Nationals at the completion of my college sailing career, I joined the crew of that year's Bermuda Race winner Carina. After that, it was time to find a job! Paul Coble offered me a position on Heritage's shore team and I joined a number of my former college sailing competitors on the crew.

Heritage on lift Charlie Morgan not only designed, built and skipped Heritage (US-23), he also built the sails! Morgan was th e first to install a hydraulic lift in order to dry sail his wooden 12 to minimize water-weight gain. Unfortunately, Heritage suffered from the same malad y as Valiant (US-24). The trend was to continue increasing displacement particularly aft, remember the famous bustles? Even Intrepid (US-22), re-designed by Brit Chance had moved in this direction.

I was recently asked why I do not have more photos from 1970. Well one day upon Heritage's return to the dock after racing, I set down my camera to handle her lines and never saw that camera again. --SL.

IT'S ROUGH ON SAILS AND SAILORS AT CUP JUBILEE
The New York Times: SPORTS, by Herb McCormick
Monday, August 20, 2001
(transcribed text below)
It_s Rough on Sails and Sailors at Cup Jubilee;
COWES, England, Aug. 19 - Shortly before setting out today in its capacity as the official flagship for the America's Cup Jubilee, America, the 130-foot replica of the schooner that won the first Cup race in 1851- was hailed by a local sailor passing by on a small sloop.

"Look at all the trouble you've caused us," he yelled at the crew.

For British sailors, the main trouble with the America's Cup is that, despite countless challenges in the intervening 150 years, they have failed to win it back.

But that did not stop the Royal Yacht Squadron, in conjunction with the New York Yacht Club, from organizing an ambitious Jubilee regatta to commemorate that first race in the same waters in which it was sailed.

And in cool, blustery conditions this morning on the Solent, the current-swept waterway that separates mainland England from the Isle of Wight, the racing started for more than 160 boats in 15 divisions.

Conspicuous by their absence, however, were the 36 yachts entered in the three marquee 12-Metre classes, and the nine boats scheduled to race in the International America's Cup Class fleet. With a building breeze that leveled off at a fresh 25 knots with gusts over 30, the conditions were deemed too boisterous for the relatively delicate twelves.

As the day unfolded, it appeared that in the case of the 12-Metres, discretion may well have triumphed over valor. Some 22 yachts retired from the racing, many with blown-out spinnakers or damaged mainsails or jibs. In that respect, it was a good day to be a sailmaker.

But it was a trying day for... read more

America's Cup Formula Includes Money, Genius, Craftsmanship, Patriotism

part 4: Olin Stephens continues...
Computers in Future
"Soon I intend to start using a computer. Of course, you have to know what questions to ask a computer or a tank, and the tank isn't perfect- it makes mistakes, which might lead a designer astray. And it can't possibly show you every condition a yacht gets into. Although we have rough water arrangements at Hoboken, they provide primarily for taking the seas head-on and that isn't entirely satisfactory."

The best of Stephen's series of models provided the hull lines for Constellation and with that conclusion the first and biggest of his headaches was over. The construction has to be supervised. Rig, sails and gear arrangements have to be made. But a Twelve-Metre's function is entirely speed- to comply with the rule and win races- and the designer doesn't have to make the compromises instead upon by cruising boat owners.

Human, Fallible Crew
He doesn't have to worry about- though he probably will- the time to come when Constellation will be out of his hands and in those of a human, fallible crew. Crew- brilliant on Weatherly, middling on Columbia- was a big reason why a Stephens boat did not defend the Cup in 1962. There is always a chance that his boat may have the edge inherent ability, and the helmsman of the opposing craft emerge as a Vanderbilt or a Mosbacher.

These anxieties, at any rate, are premature. They concern the late summer days in the Brenton Reef swell of Newport, and not the winter mornings, twice a week when Olin Stephens and his brother Rod, the firm's field engineer, drive out to City Island to call in at Minneford's the yard where Constellation is building.

Minneford's has in addition to its own men many of the skilled craftsmen who built Columbia at the now shut-down Nevins yard next door. Paul Coble, who was Stephen's man-on-the-spot at Nevins in 1958 is assistant superintendent at Minneford's. Nils Halvorsen who lofted Columbia, is doing the same for Constellation. He is a small, elderly Norwegian, springy and close-grained, a man who has spent a long life in company with good wood.
