Reflection for Worship. . .

Celebration Sunday
First Corinthians 12:12-31

This Sunday is a special celebration in the life of our congregation! For the first time in almost ninety years we are worshipping in a different building - with our host congregation at the First United Methodist Church, 500 East Colorado Blvd. Rev. Sandy Olewine, Marlene and myself will all share very brief reflections on the lectionary text for the day - an extended metaphor about how the gathering of God's people is like the connections and functions of a human body. The goal of any church is to do ministry - and to do that effectively and joyfully, we need to work together, sharing our gifts, discerning direction, providing good stewardship of our collective resources and inviting others to join us in serving God. This Sunday we look forward to meeting those in the congregation that are leasing us space in their church for at least the next two years! Worship begins at 10AM in the Sanctuary, parking is behind the building off Green Street, just east of Los Robles and spaces for seniors are available close to the rear entrance of the church.

-Rev. John H. Pomeroy

Also this Sunday Jan. 27th

Directly after worship FCC and FUMC pastors will all gather for coffee hour in the Fellowship Hall and have a time of sharing from the three pastors about our new venture together in this building while lunch is being prepped for us. Then we will all gather for a lunch that is being prepared by FUMC folks. This is a time to begin to connect with the Methodist folks who have so generously welcomed us!!!

Where to park this Sunday: since we will all be arriving at the same time this week, please plan to arrive early and park in one of these places:
-on the streets around the church which are free parking on Sundays,
-in the lots next to the church which enter off Green (several spots are marked for Seniors and there are several Handicapped spots near the church as well),
-in the Planetary Society parking lot which you may enter on Los Robles,
-in the Kaiser parking structure which is free until 2:00 on Sundays and the entrance is on El Dorado between Los Robles and S. Oakland.

Nursery will take place after Children's Time. Parents are asked to accompany their children and sign in this week on the combined sheet. Jackie and Lachlan will be staffing the nursery in addition to the FUMC nursery staff.

Church School will be led by Roberta White and Grace Rinck this Sunday in our main office space on the 3rd floor. They will take the time to familiarize our children with the building and our new space!

Lunch will be served for all in the Fellowship Hall.

Ordination of Randy VanDeventer will be held at 3:00 at the La Canada Congregational Church located at 1200 Foothill Blvd. This special celebration is the culmination of many years of education and preparation by Randy, our church and the SCNC Central Association Church and Ministry Committee. Randy's FCC Support Committee also met and shepherded Randy through the process over the past few years and consists of: Andy Schwiebert, Don Hughes, Cindy Speakman, Jeff Levison and Sonnet Apple.

Previous Associate Pastor Andrew Schwiebert will be the preacher for the service and Beau Wammack of (a)Spire Ministry and our Music Director Connie Washburn will be providing the music for the service. Our Membership Ministry (Lu, Kim, Kevin, Tara and Marlene) are organizing the reception to be held directly after the service in the Fellowship Hall. Thanks for those who signed up to bring food! We hope you will come and enjoy this wonderful celebration of Randy's ordination.

We will begin our new worship time and location on this date - the time is 11:30 which is after the Methodists have their worship so the parking should be eased up in the lots. We will have all our usual traditions starting this week: choir rehearsal, our choir, church school, nursery and church school. We will have an extended Coffee Hour this week as we settle into our new worship routine. Please speak with Sallie or Pastor Marlene if you wish to contribute something.

The Move Out of 464 E. Walnut St. is Almost Complete!!

Huge thanks to Sallie and her staff who have cleaned out almost every room of our old building and moved items out of the building. This week our offices, the Guild Room, the Youth Room and the Choir Room were emptied. Pianos were moved (one to our new chapel space at FUMC); another to Andy Whitenack's house for refurbishment. Sallie is still working out of her office as she finalizes last details. A huge THANK YOU to the extraordinary work done by Sallie over the last several months in preparation for this move.

Some of our items have been placed in our storage space in East Pasadena, while items we will be using have been brought to our new space at 500 E. Colorado Blvd. Sallie continues to oversee the hanging of our bulletin boards, plaques, and the purchase of storage cabinets for our new offices. The rest of the staff is slowly getting settled in and unpacking boxes and setting up their offices. NOTE: we are still working with AT&T on getting our phone lines transferred over. Our office phones do not yet receive calls so please use email and staff cell phones in the meantime to contact church staff.

Thanks for everyone's patience, work and prayers through this transition!

Bad Weather Shelter Meal

Our first date  was cancelled due to the weather not being cold enough; our next date is Sunday Feb. 17th. Please plan to arrive at 5:30. Joey Bland is collecting names for this evening. Please email him at [email protected] and our pastors [email protected]

Please note, since the BWS is weather-activated we always need to wait and hear whether or not the shelter will be opened on our assigned night. We hope to hear either Friday or Saturday morning whether or not we are a go! Thanks for your patience in helping us help others.
