Are You Ready for Wildfire Season?

Every year, wildfires burn across the U.S., and more and more people are living where wildfires are a real risk. But by working together, residents can make their own property - and their neighborhood - much safer from wildfire by creating a defensible space.

Action steps for around your home:

  • CLEAR leaves and other vegetative debris from roofs, gutters, porches and decks. This helps prevent embers from igniting your home.
  • REMOVE dead vegetation and other items from under your deck or porch, and within 10 feet of the house.
  • SCREEN in areas below patios and decks with wire mesh to prevent debris and combustible materials from accumulating.
  • REMOVE flammable materials (wood piles, propane tanks) within 30 feet of your home's foundation and outbuildings, including garages and sheds. If it can catch fire, don't let it touch your house, deck or porch.
  • PRUNE trees so the lowest branches are 6 to 10 feet from the ground. Wildfire can spread to tree tops.
  • DISPOSE of debris and lawn cuttings quickly to reduce fuel for fire.
  • INSPECT shingles or roof tiles. Replace or repair the shingles that are loose or missing to prevent ember penetration.
  • COVER exterior attic vents with metal wire mesh no larger than 1/8 inch to prevent sparks from entering the home.
  • ENCLOSE eaves and screen soffit vents using 1/8 mesh metal screening to prevent ember entry.
The more actions a community takes, the more fire adapted it becomes. Learn how you can make a difference in your community.

Millbrae CERT Updates
Marge Colapietro, Millbrae LEND-CERT  Volunteer Coordinator,
LEND Radio Net Coordinator and Public Information Officer

" The earth laughs in flowers " are words attributed to E. E. Cummings. May is a transition from April showers to May flowers and a month in which we recognize, honor, celebrate and pay tribute to many of the persons and institutions who value what we hold dear.

There are several that we all can be grateful for and to:
Teacher Appreciation Week (4/30-5/06), May Day and Law Day (5/01), National Day of Prayer (5/03), Cinco de Mayo (5/05), National Nurses Day (5/o6), Military Spouse Appreciation Day (5/11), Mother's Day (5/13), Armed Forces Week and National Police Week (5/13-5/19), Peace Officer's Memorial Day (5/15), National Emergency Services - EMS Week (5/20-5/26), Harvey Milk Day (5/22), EMS for Children's Day, National Missing Children's Day (5/25) and Memorial Day (5/30). Older Americans and Asian Pacific American Heritage is also celebrated throughout the month of May. It is amazing that so much of May recognizes those in "Public Service."

Our Millbrae CERT Coordinator - Dino De Ranieri has added our CERT, LEND, MARC and SVIP volunteers to this list saying again " we could not do what we do in our great Emergency Preparedness Programs without the sacrifices of time and talents of our community volunteers who continuously step-up when called upon and I thank you for being the best!"

*We welcome Tom Williams who has been hired by the City Council to act as the "Interim City Manager" while a search is conducted for a "Permanent" City Manager. We look forward to a visit from Mr. Williams as he makes the rounds meeting our various volunteer groups in the City.

In Memoriam
This is also a time when our Millbrae Community recalls and pays tribute to our own MILLBRAE POLICE OFFICER DAVID J. CHETCUTI (BADGE NO. 6) whose end of watch occurred on April 25, 1998 when he was brutally shot and killed in the line of duty while assisting a fellow Officer in the apprehension of a man being chased down Hwy. 101 for a vehicle violation. April 25, 2018 marked the "20th Anniversary of the murder of Officer David J. Chetcuti.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and our then Millbrae Police Officers and Firefighters who served alongside Officer Chetcuti. You are not forgotten.
