March 2018  Family E-newsletter

Join us on the course for a fun day!

The 13th annual Child's Voice Golf Tournament is Tuesday, June 12th at Cantigny Golf Club in Wheaton.  This fundraiser helps Child's Voice continue to positively change the lives of children with hearing loss and their families.  In addition to 18 holes of scramble golf, the tournament also allows golfers to interact with alumni and current Child's Voice students.   Not a golfer?  No problem!  We encourage everyone to attend the reception, dinner and program with great food and drink, a live auction, raffle and excellent testimonials given by  Child's Voice alumni.

Parent Resources & Updates
Early Intervention Program Update
In the Roscoe Village Early Intervention Program, the toddlers are learning about different weather vocabulary. They've enjoyed playing in a pretend rainstorm and painting suns with kool-aid.  The parents are learning to model grammatical language for their toddlers. This means including all of the little words in sentences since sometimes we over simplify what we say to toddlers.

In Wood Dale, our toddlers are learning about flowers and gardens.

Lovin' Literacy -
How Parents Can Support the Common Core Reading Standards
The Common Core is a set of a cademic standards in mathematics and language arts/literacy that are used around the country.  These learning goals outline what a student should know and be able to do at the end of each grade.  To discover the skills targeted within the common core literacy section and to learn ways you can help your child at home, please Click Here

Audiology Update
The Early Hearing Detection & Intervention meetings were held in Denver  March 18-20, 2018 with Michele Wilkins,  Ed.D., LSLS Cert. AVEd, Dr. Megan Wernsman, AuD, and  Wendy Deters,  M.S., CCC/SLP, LSLS Cert. AVEd, in attendance.  T he annual EHDI Meetings bring together professionals and parents  to identify areas of concern, promote collaboration, and share best practices with the intent of improving early hearing screening, diagnosis, and intervention systems for infants/young children and their families.  The 2019 EHDI Meetings will be held in Chicago on March 3-5, 2019 at the Hyatt Regency.  Mark your calendars!

Keep Skills Sharp During Spring Break -  Help your child stay at the top of his learning game during spring break - no flashcards involved!

Spring break means a well-deserved reprieve from homework and daily obligations.  But before you know it, the break will be over and it will be back to the bus stop.  Don't let school skills like reading, writing, and math slide completely during spring break.  For a list of family-friendly activities to keep skills sharp, please Click Here

Fundraising Corner!
Events and benefits...
Child's Voice is fortunate enough to be the beneficiary of several "third party events".  When an event or benefit collects funds through raffles or auctions, they need to donate the proceeds to a non-profit with a 501(c)(3) status.  Here are just a few partnerships we have over the next few months:  Wood Dale Charity Gala, DuPage Human Race and Kendra Scott Gives Back.

Donation Dish...Where are donations currently going?
Currently we are raising money for SMART Boards in each classroom.  These boards are making a big impact in class and the students love them. We are so grateful for your investment in this! Thanks to you and many civic partners, we have installed 5 boards - ONLY 4 more to go!  Thank you for your support!
