GSC Faculty E-News for January 2019
Ringing in the New Year through Enhanced Collaboration

As we move into 2019, I want to take a moment to thank all of you for the great work you do. Many of you are juggling careers and family in addition to your duties as faculty. Here at GSC we feel fortunate to have such a dedicated and knowledgeable faculty helping educate our students.

Collaboration will become increasingly important as we move into the new year. Each of us brings a wealth of knowledge to our community. Sharing this knowledge will help us educate each other and allow us to build rapport as a learning community.

This year, I encourage you to share your knowledge with both your students and your colleagues. Through our monthly newsletters, Two-Minute Tuesdays, webinars, and Three-Minute Thursdays we will continue to share ideas and celebrate successes for our faculty. Please allow yourself the opportunity to participate and engage with these resources as they provide an opportunity to connect with your colleagues and share ideas.

Together, we can continue to innovate our curriculum and create lasting imprints on our student’s lives.

Thank you for all you do!
With regards,

Dr. Scott Stanley, Provost & Vice President of Academic Affairs

Grading Dilemmas

Many of us have run into the age-old question at the end of each term “ Why Didn’t I Get an A ?” This can be an exhausting and time consuming ordeal for both faculty and students.

This month I encourage you to take a few moments to read the Inside Higher Ed article Why Didn’t I Get an A ” written by Colleen Flaherty where you can learn about an alternative solution that academic departments can utilize to streamline the grade appeal process. This has been proven to help eliminate the back and forth between students and faculty.

Here are a few tips to consider as you begin your winter term.

  • Consider using the technique outlined in the article above. Work with your Department Head to determine the best way to integrate it into your class.
  • Review your syllabus to ensure that the grading policy is clear and concise. For clarity ask someone else to review as well.
  • Have students review the syllabus in the first week of class.  Create an assignment that ensures that they have read and understand what is expected of them.

Keep in mind that we are here to support you through any disputes you may encounter. Should you need advice or suggestions please feel free to reach out to your department head.

If you have ideas that have worked for you, we would love to hear them.

We are here to help!

Grading Policies and Resources

Here are a few policies and resources that can help guide you through any grade disputes you may encounter.

The most important resource for you is the Academic Affairs office. If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to your Academic Affairs administrators for guidance.

  • Student Grade Appeals: There may be circumstances beyond a student's control that prevent him/her from completing his/her coursework for a term. Students should consult with an Academic Advisor prior to withdrawing or beginning the petition process. Petitions may also be submitted for variance of other college policies. If you have a student who is asking for a grade appeal, please refer them to the Petition Guidelines and Forms website here.
