January 27, 2019:  Missing the Mark

If you've ever served on a committee here, or taken an RE class, or joined a small group, chances are you've made a covenant. We are practiced at naming our intentions, our high hopes for how we will be with one another. But what happens when we miss the mark? How do we deal with our capacity to cause harm?

Covenanting within UUCM and also the UUA district and regional entities provides mutual support for UU congregations. The middle schoolers you saw Sunday were from a UUA Pacific Central District program that grew out of the YRUU district program. (YRUU is the general term for the High School UU youth). Another of the remaining district entities is the PCD LRDEA. The Liberal Religious Educators Association. The professional leadership which runs the RE programs in our UU congregations has this professional organization to support congregations and district RE programs. I have been part of LREDA since 2013 and have been the treasurer for three years. The Exec Team of LREDA has put $1000 of our savings into a mediation process which brings YRUU of the Pacific, PWR staff, DREs and Ministers to the table to work on some sticky issues. These youth-adult relations conversations are crucial. Whenever there are chances for a dialog to dig into problem-solving I support it. Doing work with youth is messy, yet profound. Some of this dialog has been going on for decades, generations, and some for over millennia.  The key is to stay engaged.
Ways to engage for parents and families:
Jan 27 - Parent Group, noon -1pm
Feb 2 - Lunar New Year Celebration, 5-8 pm
Feb 8 - Game Night, 7-9pm
May 3-5 - UUCM Retreat at Walker Creek Ranch
FYI - I will be on a professional development retreat next week with my PCD LREDA colleagues out in Camp Meeker, CA. (Jan 29-31, Tuesday afternoon through Thursday afternoon.)

Congregational Workshop

Congregational Workshop
Friday, January 25, 5:30-9:00pm   (for the entire congregation)
Saturday, January 26, 8:45am-12:00pm   (for congregational leaders)

Rev. Jan Christian, our regional congregational life staff, comes this month to facilitate a "Start-up" workshop. UU congregations across our denomination have found the opportunity for an outside professional to facilitate conversation between a congregation and a new minister early in their ministry to be an incredibly valuable experience. This weekend will energize and inspire us for the road ahead.

On Friday evening, Jan will engage our whole community in exploring the history and culture of the congregation. We'll begin with a potluck supper at 5:30, and plan to end at 9pm. (Bring a dish of your choice).

On Saturday morning (8:45am-12:00pm), Jan will lead a conversation for congregational leaders about expectations of roles and responsibilities, supporting us in clarifying how we will work together to achieve our five developmental goals. The Board, Committee on Shared Ministry, all committee chairs are encouraged to attend.

Remarkable People is back!  We are planning four sessions this spring: Third Fridays of February, March, April, and May, at 7 PM in the Fireside Room.  New members are especially encouraged to attend: this is a chance to hear two members each month sharing with us important aspects of their lives. Refreshment time allows for conversation and a deepening sense of community.
