Donor's Dedication Grows 
with Community Foundation:
Profile of Donor Sarah Johnson  

 

When the Community Foundation of Tompkins County was created in 2000, Sarah Johnson was so impressed with the organization that she became one of its early donors.

"I thought it was a really exciting idea," says Johnson, who had moved to Ithaca to earn a graduate degree in human development at Cornell. "It is a way, if you're attached to a community, for like-minded people to band together. They are more powerful if they're together than if they're apart."

After working as a lab manager at the College of Human Ecology at Cornell, Johnson was hired as director of operations for the former Women's Community Building, where she became more aware of the role the Community Foundation plays in Tompkins County. During the eight years she held that position, she interacted with many local nonprofit organizations that rented space in the Women's Community Building.

"So many of the nonprofits held events at the building," Johnson says. "I became immersed in that world and I learned a lot about it.'

Community Foundation announces its 2019 Board of Directors:
Elected to the board for a first three year term are Theoria Cason, Training and Education Coordinator, Co-Investigator, Office of the Title IX Coordinator, Cornell;  Linda Gasser, adjunct lecturer, ILR School, Cornell; Mary MacAusland, Senior Lecturer, School of Hotel Administration, Cornell; Jim Mazza, Senior Advisor, Alumni Affairs and Development, Cornell; Steve Ruoff, retired local businessman and community volunteer; and Khandi Sokoni, attorney at True, Walsh & Sokoni, LLP.

Elected to the board for a second three year term are Jan Conrad and Clover Drinkwater.

Leadership for 2019 is Susan Murphy, Chairperson, Sandy Dhimitri, Vice-Chairperson, Steve Pope, Treasurer, Alice Moore, Secretary and Randy Ehrenberg as Immediate Past Chair.

In addition, continuing board members are Christine Barksdale, Bill Currie, Nicole Eversley Bradwell, Ann Martin, Keith McCafferty, Phil McPheron, Liebe Meier Swain, Ben Renberg, Michelle Rios-Dominguez, Eric Schillinger, Kevin Shreve, Lynn Swain and Lucia Tyler.

For the 2018-19 academic year Ben Kalter and Vinthra Raveendran serve as Johnson Board Fellows.

Sadly the winter weather caused the the multi-agency sponsored community lunch scheduled for Monday, January 21 to be postponed.  

To continue the work of seeking racial justice, take a listen to this important conversation from Monday's WHCU's All Things Equal Podcast.

Community Foundation's GIAC Endowment Fund continues to make annual grants to support their food and tech programs and to date has contributed more than $100,000. And our Social Justice Fund continues to advance the causes and work inspired by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Whether large events like our annual celebration in June or smaller, midsize offerings like our fund contacts luncheon in April or more intimate gatherings like our Legacy Society luncheon, we have something for everyone. We seek to support all of your philanthropic needs by building connections, fostering community and providing information.
