In the 1878 Loomis Family Testimonial, Hezekiah Loomis described "... a sentiment, born of the strong natural love and sympathy between us, and intensified by the loss of all our children, [that] crystallized into a desire to leave some memento of our lives ... [which] took the form of a free educational establishment called the Loomis Institute." This school, open to both boys and girls and with no religious or political test for entrance, welcomed its first class in the fall of 1914. "The Harvest of Our Lives" describes the remarkable founding of Loomis Chaffee on these principles of egalitarian access. During this week when we celebrate the principles of equity and inclusion as modeled by Martin Luther King, Jr., we are proud to share our unique history, to provide a new informational podcast on our extensive commitment to socioeconomic diversity, and to highlight just a sampling of the community activities on the Island that engage our students and faculty in the important work of social justice as citizens of the world as our Founders intended.
