Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce: US Senate Conversation
Hampton Road’s Chamber of Commerce hosted the “US Senate Conversation”, December 10, 2018, at The Main in Norfolk, VA. United States Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine discussed the current state of affairs in Washington and it’s impact on the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Skilled Trades Academy at Tidewater Community College
Tidewater Community College President Greg DeCinque welcomed US Senator Tim Kaine and Congressmen Bobby Scott to Portsmouth Virginia for the grand opening of Tidewater Community College's new Skilled Trades Academy on December 10, 2018. 

The new 20,000-square-foot academy at 3303 Airline Blvd., provides short-term workforce training for in-demand construction and maritime trades. To learn more about the Skilled Trades Academy click here .
Port of Virginia Welcomes New Ship-To-Shore Cranes
Hampton Roads welcomed the nations largest ship-to-shore cranes on January 7th, 2019. The arrival of these cranes is part of the $320 million expansion project taking place at Virginia International Gateway.

The new cranes stand at 170' tall and are able to accommodate the largest class of cargo ships in production. With increased maritime traffic and rapid production of even larger cargo ships, these cranes will ensure the Port of Virginia remains a front runner in international shipping and trade.

Tidewater Community College Hosts German Immersion Apprenticeship Exchange Program
In November, Tidewater Community College hosted Daniel Ott and Florian Wirnitzer. These two German Apprentice Students work for DEHN, a German manufacturing company specializing in Lightning Protection.

The apprentices got to tour local companies to get an overview of how American apprenticeship programs work as well as get a full cultural immersion into the ways of American life.
Visit to Maine Maritime Academy
SMART Director, Jennifer Palestrant recently had the opportunity to spend a day at Maine Maritime Academy , one of the six state academies, in beautiful Castine, Maine.

She toured the engine, navigation and logistics lab. Jennifer met with the Director of Admission and enjoyed a beautiful trip along the Bagaduce River.

Save the Date: SMART Summer Maritime Camp

The adventure starts June 24th - 28th 2019 and will include maritime related field trips and tours as well as a cardboard boat building race. Email Tobey Anne Allen if you would like to be added to the mailing list for registration information.
Have you ever thought of a career in maritime or transportation? Join us for an exciting and fun-filled day for our Women Take the Wheel event for Girl Scouts! The girls will have the opportunity to speak with women in the maritime and trucking industry, as well as enjoy an exciting virtual trip on a ship with our maritime simulator. There will be hands-on activities with an opportunity to see all types of trucks, and meet local career women and men in these professional fields!

All activities will go towards earning requirements for a Women In Trucking Patch! Saturday, March 23rd, 10 AM - 12 PM! For more information contact: Tobey Anne Allen .
