Rector's Ramblings

This was an interesting week. We celebrated MLK Jr. Day this week at the same time all the headlines were breathlessly reporting about the ongoing government shutdown. There's an interesting juxtaposition there, and also some similarities. It's interesting to think about national movements and passions around Civil Rights then, and some of the things that we're arguing about now. The two fights just don't seem morally equivalent, not that anyone has suggested they are. There is certainly plenty of passion to go around these days, regardless.

Thursday Afternoon Book Study
The Thursday Book Study is back and is meeting 1:00 pm each week. We will be reading Lamb, The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal

"The birth of Jesus has been well chronicled, as have his glorious teachings, acts, and divine sacrifice after his thirtieth birthday. But no one knows about the early life of the Son of God, the missing years -- except Biff, the Messiah's best bud, who has been resurrected to tell the story in the divinely hilarious yet heartfelt work 'reminiscent of Vonnegut and Douglas Adams'."

Terrorism, war, political polarization, climate change, the depletion of oil, economic upheaval, social inequality and injustice, mass extinction... Today's challenges can feel overwhelming. Together, we'll participate in a creative process to identify specific ways to affect positive change in the world.

 Children and Youth

Safeguarding God's Children - February 26 & March 3
The Episcopal Church is committed to providing a safe and loving environment for our children and youth to come and explore their faith and spirituality. One of the ways we do our best to accomplish this is training our children and youth workers, as well as our church leaders in the prevention of sexual abuse happening with any children trusted in our care. Mother Katie will be leading training on what this looks like at Christ Church. We encourage our parents to take the time to look at the training the Episcopal church offers its church leaders called Safeguarding God's Children (click here), as well as come to our training sessions either on February 26, from 6:00 - 7:30 pm or March 3, from 12:30 - 2:00 pm. This will help you understand how we can keep our children safe while they are at their church.

This is difficult material to be absorbed and hard to face. Unfortunately, the abuse of the more vulnerable happens regularly. The Episcopal church chooses to face these difficult truths for the health and wholeness of all those who seek the benefits found in being a member of the body of Christ. Please feel free to contact Christ Church clergy if you are in need of pastoral care - we are here for you. Contact Mtr. Katie at katie@ccfssi.org for more information.

Get to Know Your ECW
Who is ECW? Every lady of Christ Church is member of ECW!! We have a variety of guilds we sponsor and encourage you to find one that suits your interests. We have groups that arrange flowers, provide meals for the sick or families with newborns, altar service, reception planning, welcoming visitors into the church... just about anything that needs to be done around the church. Come join us and bring your energy!

Last May your ECW gave away  $85,000.to area charities blessing women and children. Where does this come from??? Our annual Tour of Homes generated  half  of that amount and the year-long sale of the cookbook generated the other  half.  The TOH is a big  one day  event which takes nearly a year and 400 volunteers to plan and execute. The cookbook sales happen quietly  all year long  by another dedicated group of volunteers, who greet our visitors to the church or make the cookbook available in our local stores. All of our volunteers are valued and we thank you all for your many hours of service. COME JOIN US!!

The 66th Tour of Homes is March 16th. Find place to volunteer and help us make a difference in lives!
