A Message from the Principal

Lovejoy HS News 05 07 18

P arents and Guardians,

Today begins our two weeks of Advanced Placement (AP) and End of Course (EOC) testing.  Although I know it can be a stressful time for students and teachers, it is also the opportunity to reap the benefit of the hard work they have put in all year.  If your student will be taking one of the 2,175 exams that will be given over the next 10 school days, I wish them (and you) all the best!

Please take a few minutes and read below for important information about upcoming events.  Even though we only have a few weeks left in the school year, there are lots of things happening you will want to be aware of.

Have a great week,

Chris Mayfield
Principal
Lovejoy High School
NOTE:
In an effort to be as efficient as possible, we prioritize our parent email as follows:

Volunteers Needed for AP Testing
We're covered for week 1 of AP Testing but are still in need of volunteers to assist with proctoring during week 2
Below is a description of what you'll be doing and a schedule of the testing days for which we need proctors. To sign up, please click on the link associated with the day(s) and time(s) that you would like to help. If you are not already a registered volunteer with Lovejoy ISD, you will need to click here to complete a background check application.

Volunteer Description:
Volunteers cannot have a student taking the same AP exam that they proctor. Volunteers will not be responsible for reading the exam instructions on test day. There will be an AP teacher, counselor or other staff member in charge of the exam room, and that individual will be reading the exam instructions. Volunteers will help check-in the students prior to entering the exam room, collect cell phones, help distribute and collect the exam materials, and assist with actively monitoring throughout the exam time. You will report directly to the head proctor (a Lovejoy staff member) in the exam room.

Morning Volunteers should plan to arrive no later than 7:15 am.
Afternoon Volunteers should plan to arrive no later than 11:30 am.

KWHS Investment Competition
Three Lovejoy juniors recently competed in an international Investment Competition at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania . The young men, Seth Roundtree, Rithik Tangella, Collins Morgan and Andrew Chang (Andrew was unable to make the competition) formed a team called Medici Capital were required to have at least 4 members - the majority of teams had 6 members. Over the course of three months, the team competed against more than 1,500 high schools worldwide, devising a strategy to invest in the stock market. Each team was given $100,000 to invest within Wharton's OTIS simulator. The OTIS simulator is a real-time stock market simulator used by business students at Wharton. The team studied the stock market and made investment decisions on a daily basis - keep in mind that the market opened and closed during school hours. At the end of the competition, Medici Capital netted $72,000 - a 72% return on their investment. The team had the highest return of any other team in the entire competition and finished 1st in all of the Americas. The next closest team in the entire competition netted a 24% return. The young men then prepared a mid-term report and a final 13-page investment report. These were submitted as part of their final entry. Their team was 1 of 18 teams worldwide invited to attend an investment workshop and to present their investment strategies to a judging panel. The panel was comprised of executives from Goldman Sach, other Wall Street investment firms, lawyers, and faculty from the Wharton School.

The young men traveled to Philadelphia this past weekend to attend the competition finals. Other teams hired private coaches or had academic advisors from their school in support of their team. At the end of the competition, Medici Capital placed 2nd in the Americas and 4th worldwide. When the final results were announced and the student stepped forward, the judges requested their coaches stand. Medici Capital was the only team with no coaches. Their final placement was somewhat bewildering since they had the highest return on their investment in the entire competition. The first place team's return on investment was only $1,000. However, that team worked with professors at MIT to develop a program used to select stocks to invest in. Former Wharton alumni and judges were amazed at how well the Lovejoy team performed and wondered how they had made it to the finals without any additional support. The team was the first team ever to qualify for the finals from Texas and the only team finalist without an academic advisor or coach.

Computer Science Team
The Lovejoy Computer Science team traveled to Austin Texas to compete in the UIL State Academic Computer Science contest after placing 1st at the Regional competition in April.

The Lovejoy Team placed 2nd in the team event which consisted of the written test and programming competitions.

On the Computer Science Written portion, two students earned top spots for Lovejoy at the State meet:

2nd Place - Mark Wen                                                        3rd Place - Sam Bell

UIL Journalism

Senior Hannah Ortega and sophomore Kelsey Carroll both placed at the UIL State Academic Meet in Austin on Friday. Ortega took third in headline writing in class 5A. Carroll placed fourth in feature writing. Ortega also qualified for state in for feature writing. It was the second consecutive trip to Austin for the pair as both qualified for state in feature last year. Lovejoy finished fourth overall in the journalism team competition. Both have qualified with enough points to be named to the UIL All-State journalism staff for a second straight year along with junior Parker Nolan. Sophomore Lily Hager has also qualified for the All-State staff.

The Lovejoy News Network also received two honorable mentions.

The Tops in Texas award can be described as the best of the firsts. In presenting the award, the first place winners from the MS, 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A, and 6A conferences in a certain category, such as sports feature, are compared and one of the six is crowned as the best example of that certain category in the state. The Red Ledger was also one of only five online publications in the state to receive the Gold Star Award , which is ILPC's highest honor. Both broadcast and newspaper received the state's top rating, the Award of Distinguished Merit, as well.

The newspaper and broadcast staffs have won more than 150 awards this year, including picking up 65 "Best in Texas" awards from the Texas Association of Journalism Educators in March.
