Weekly Digest - January 2, 2018
City of Golden /  911 10th Street  /  Golden, CO

Hello 2018 - nice to meet you!

Old Christmas Tree
The holidays are in the rear view and 2018 is here! What will you do with your new year? Your first act might be helping beautify Golden by dropping off your old Christmas tree (with all the trimmings removed!) for recycling. Today's old Christmas tree will be turned into this spring's mulch, available to anyone looking to spruce up their gardens when the warm weather finds us again! Keep reading below for the details on this great program.

It's also worth noting the upcoming project to replace the culvert at Apex Gulch and Heritage Road. The project, which begins Jan. 15, will last about 2 months and will require some road closures. More information directly below.

Keep reading for more of what's happening in Golden and have a great week!

Current Projects
Heritage Road at Apex Gulch work begins January 15

The City of Golden plans to begin construction to replace the culvert beneath Heritage Road at Apex Gulch. The concrete box culvert that carries Apex under Heritage Rd is collapsing and must be replaced before it fails completely. To complete this work, road closures will be necessary.

Please download the map below for location and detours. Construction is scheduled to begin on January 15, 2018 and should last 2 months, weather dependent.

Notifications have been mailed to area residents, and variable message boards have also been placed on Heritage Rd.
Utility Replacement

Water main replacement continues on Johnson Road between 14th Ave and South Golden Road. Pressure and Bacti testing of installed sections are underway. Final pipe installs and tie-ins are scheduled for the next two to three weeks, weather permitting.
Water Treatment Plant

The water treatment plant is in the process of removing sediment that has deposited in the west raw water pond. This sediment is being stockpiled on site and will be removed in early 2018.

Once completed, the capacity of the pond will be improved and water will flow more freely to the east pond.

Why Has America Stopped Inventing?

Join us at this free, dual meeting of FRIENDS of the Jefferson County Public Library and the JeffCo Innovators' Workshop. This is a meet and greet, networking and author event featuring Denver attorney Darin Gibby who will discuss his books including "Why Has America Stopped Inventing?" and "Chasing Hindy." Participants will also have the opportunity to showcase a product or service, and practice their pitch!

From 6 to 6:30 p.m., attendees are encouraged to bring prototypes, actual samples, or concept drafts for their new product or service to share with the group in an informal networking session/mini-tradeshow. As long as it is not bigger than a beer cooler, you don't not have to notify the Workshop in advance.

Then, participate with Darin Gibby in a discussion of his books "Why Has America Stopped Inventing" and "Chasing Hindy." In addition to a thriving career as a novelist, author Darin Gibby is also one of the country's premiere patent attorneys and a partner at the prestigious firm of Kilpatrick Townsend. With over 20 years of experience in obtaining patents on hundreds of inventions from the latest drug delivery systems to life-saving cardiac equipment, he has built IP portfolios for numerous Fortune 500 companies. In addition to securing patents, Gibby helps clients enforce and license their patents around the world, and he has monetized patents on a range of products.

Following Darin Gibby, there will be time for two or three "practice pitches" about a business or service. Everybody has a pitch for their product or company, but, how good is yours? At the JeffCo Innovators' Workshop on January 10, you can present your 5 to 8-minute pitch (with or without slides) and get valuable feedback from our experts and the audience in a friendly setting.
To participate on January 10 with your pitch you must contact Deborah Deal in advance at  Deborah@IxPowerFoundation.org with your name, phone # and some information about what you want to pitch. Also tell us if you will need the slide projector. (You can also show your product at the 6-6:30 pm networking time.) First come! First served! We will hold a spot for the first three requesters.

Free, but please  RSVP online.
(If you are bringing more than yourself, and want to RSVP for several people without going through Meetup, go to  Eventbrite and enter search term "Inventing" or JeffCo Innovators Workshop.)

The JeffCo Innovators' Workshop offered by the IX Power Foundation has been operating in Jefferson County since 2013. To suggest a speaker or topic, call the IX Power Foundation at 303-277-9523.

Recycle Your Christmas Tree

Once the last present has been unwrapped and the tinsel and lights come off, your Christmas tree might look a little lonely. Why not give it a new life as mulch that nourishes Golden's gardens in 2018?

The City of Golden provides a quick and easy way for you to dispose of your Christmas trees after the ornaments and lights have come off. Drop off your trees now through Jan. 27 west of the intersection at Highway 93 & Golden Gate Canyon Road.

Please place your tree near the sign posted for tree recycling. Trees must be stripped of all ornaments, hardware, strings of lights and tinsel. This is for live trees only. The trees will be turned into mulch, which will eventually be available for free at the public pickup site on 11th Street, just west of the Clear Creek History Park.

For further details, contact the City of Golden Forestry office at 303-384-8141.
GHM temporary closure upcoming for big renovations!

The Golden History Museum, in celebration of its forthcoming 80th anniversary in 2018, is embarking on a full renovation of the museum's public spaces. The initiative called
Discovery Awaits  will transform the museum into a warm, welcoming, and vibrant public space for uncovering and sharing our past. The renovation includes new programming spaces, a research center, a hands-on gallery for families with young children, and dynamic new exhibits that highlight the City's collection of historic objects. With the vision of "always something new to discover," the renovated Golden History Museum brings the behind-the-scenes practices of object discovery and preservation to the front of the house.

The Golden History Museum is now closed temporarily to the public during construction and installation. Golden History Museum anticipates reopening in early summer of 2018. During this period, GHM will continue to offer public programs at alternate locations around Golden.

For more information about Discovery Awaits and museum programming,  visit the GHM events page.
