In the past I jokingly referred to myself an
art doula
when explaining my role in teaching and facilitating. "I'm sort of a birthing doula for artists," I'd say, "encouraging and supporting them through the process." Then, I realized it's not a joke. I AM an art doula! I am there by your side to coach you through birthing your creative ideas out into the world. I even had it added to my business card: "Glenda Goodrich, Mixed Media Artist, Art Doula, SoulCollage® Facilitator."
What exactly is a doula? Good question. It's someone who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible. That's what I do with my workshop participants -- I hold the vision for your highest good, encourage you to breathe through constricted energy and allow visual imagery to be birthed through you.

Yes, sometimes it's emotionally (and maybe even physically!) challenging to create art. We are vulnerable when we make something and put it out there for all the world to see. We can feel judged, often most harshly by ourselves. Rest assured, I can pretty well guarantee you that all artists go through this. H
ere are my tips to help you birth your creativity:
~Do what feels right; let the portal to the Muse open and move through you, even when you're feeling insecure or unsure about the outcome.
~Be patient with yourself and let the natural order of things happen in its own time; don't rush to completion. You may not like what's happening in the moment, but have faith that if you stay the course something beautiful will emerge.
~Stop for a deep breath from time to time. Conscious breathing makes everything better. Often we get so focused in on what we're doing we forget to stop and take a deep breath for cleansing and renewal.
~Push yourself to try new things. Be courageous. Sure, you might make something you're not crazy about. But what the heck, you only live once? If not now, when?
~Create alongside other kindred spirits who will cheer you on. Some people consider art making a competitive sport. I see it as a heart-opening practice of shared abundance. Successful art pushes us all forward because the more art we make, the more beauty there is in this world.
