for Aspiring Allies

Increase your skills to effectively build support with colleagues, neighbors, and other community members to address racial oppression. Participants will explore their own identities and practice taking action to address microaggressions and interrupt oppression in real time. supported by the Civil Rights Alliance through the MOVE office at St. Mike's.

Screening of "Howard Zinn: You Can't be Neutral on a Moving Train" Sunday, February 10, 6-9pm at The Savoy Theater, 26 Main st, Montpelier.
This film looks at the life of the renowned historian, activist and author, Howard Zinn. Following his early days as a shipyard labor organizer and bombardier in World War II, Zinn became an academic rebel and leader of civil disobedience fighting against institutional racism and war. Screening followed by a Q&A with the films producers, Dennis Mueller and Deb Ellis. Tickets are suggested donation $5-$20. No one turned away for lack of funds. Toxic Whiteness Discussion Group Wednesday, February 20, 12-1pm, PJC. This space is held specifically to process how white supremacy culture is toxic to white people. The hope is that this work help white people engage in collective liberation, rather then white savior behavior. FREE.
POC in VT Affinity Group Thursday,

This program is led by people of color, for people of color. It is a monthly gathering for POC to come together to share their experiences and explore their identities. This month's meeting to be facilitated by Dr. Marissa Coleman, a licensed clinical psychologist. You do not have had to attend previous meetings in order to come. FREE.

Occupied Palestine: 2018
2018 for millions of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza marked another year of brutal military occupation and siege, denial of civil and human rights, daily attacks by Isreali soldiers, police and settlers, home demolitions, increased poverty and deprivation, land confiscations, and high rates of incarceration.
Here are the facts from Occupied Palestine for the year that is gone, most of which did not draw attention, scrutiny or condemnation from the American media or government. The Israeli occupation grinds on in 2019. So does resistance to it.

On January 25, a group of PJC staff and board members, facilitators, and others involved in social justice work from around the state will be heading to the
Equal Justice Initiative Museum and Memorial
in Montgomery, Alabama. The Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration is "located on the site of a former warehouse where black people were enslaved in Montgomery, Alabama, this narrative museum uses interactive media, sculpture, videography and exhibits to immerse visitors in the sights and sounds of the domestic slave trade, racial terrorism, the Jim Crow South, and the world's largest prison system". The site also features the National Memorial for Peace and Justice which pays honor to the more than 4,400 African American men, women, and children who were hanged, burned alive, shot, drowned, and beaten to death by white mobs between 1877 and 1950 as well as the millions more that the South as refugees from racial terrorism, profoundly impacting the entire nation.
These impactful yet heartbreaking sites that we visit will meaningfully inform the way that the Peace & Justice Center continues it's mission to inform Vermonters about the history of racism, how these atrocities continue today, and why it's important for white people to actively work to sacrifice their comfort in order to eradicate racism.

Tell ICE: Freedom for Beto!

On December 31, Cruz Alberto Sanchez-Perez, known to his friends as Beto, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents during a court appearance in Middlebury, VT. After spending New Year's Day in ICE custody, Beto was transferred to a detention center in New Hampshire where he is being held without bail. This Thursday, Beto is scheduled to appear before an immigration judge.
Beto is a leader within the LGBTQ immigrant farmworker community in Vermont. He came to the United States fleeing persecution based on his sexual orientation in his home country of Mexico. Beto has lived in Vermont for three years, working on dairy farms around the state and becoming involved in Migrant Justice, the Pride Center of Vermont, and other organizations. He has helped to lead a survey of fellow dairy workers on occupational health and safety risks, contributing valuable knowledge about a notoriously dangerous industry. Beto has also been involved in workshops on the needs of the community of LGBTQ immigrant farmworkers.
If you are near Montpelier on Thursday and can make it, there is a hearing on Fair and Impartial Policing in the Judiciary Committee of the Legislature. If you can join Migrant Justice, they are hoping to fill the committee room from 9-11:30.
