Wiping the slate clean!

Editorial bloopers
We want to own up to a couple of errors, and set the record straight.
1) In last week's edition of the Weekly Digest, the agenda for the Planning Commission meeting was inadvertently copied as the new Golden Investment Forum Task Force meeting agenda as well. We apologize for having the wrong information for the agenda.

2) In a story about the changes to our 9-1-1 service in the Golden Informer, the article has a typo in Golden's Emergency Dispatch number. The correct number is still, and will be for the foreseeable future, 303-384-8045. Our deepest apologies to the person on the other end of the phone number we accidentally provided instead, and we apologize to our readers as well for any confusion that might have caused.

We are human and occasionally make mistakes. Even with a review process in place, sometimes mistakes slip through the cracks. Please know we try our best to provide our readers timely, accurate and important information about our beautiful city. We also appreciate those who point out our errors, so that we can correct them if possible.

Speaking of "timely and important information," we do have some for you this week! Starting with the three new City Council members who will be sworn into office this Thursday. If you have time, come by City Hall at 5:30 p.m. before the organizational meeting to wish the outgoing Council members well and thank them for their service, and to welcome the incoming Councilors.

Please keep reading for more Golden-related news, and have a great week!

Current Projects
Heritage Road at Apex Gulch work begins January 15

The City of Golden plans to begin construction to replace the culvert beneath Heritage Road at Apex Gulch. The concrete box culvert that carries Apex under Heritage Road is collapsing and must be replaced before it fails completely. To complete this work, road closures will be necessary.

Please download the map below for location and detours. Construction is scheduled to begin on January 15, and should last two months, weather permitting.

Notifications have been mailed to area residents, and variable message boards have also been placed on Heritage Road.

You can also follow this project on the City's new social engagement platform www.guidinggolden.com.

Utility Replacement

Water main replacement continues on Johnson Road between 14th Ave and South Golden Road. Pressure and Bacti testing of installed sections are underway. The project should be completed by Jan. 12, weather permitting.

Gas Mains Replacement

Xcel Energy is replacing old gas mains from N. Ford Street to Texas Street. For questions, please contact Xcel.
Water Treatment Plant

The water treatment plant is in the process of removing sediment that has deposited in the west raw water pond. This sediment is being stockpiled on site and will be removed in early 2018. Once completed, the capacity of the pond will be improved and water will flow more freely to the east pond.

Why has America Stopped Inventing?

Join us at this free, dual meeting of FRIENDS of the Jefferson County Public Library and the JeffCo Innovators' Workshop on Wednesday,  Jan. 10 at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers at 911 10th St. This is a meet and greet, networking and author event featuring Denver attorney Darin Gibby who will discuss his books including "Why Has America Stopped Inventing?" and "Chasing Hindy." Participants will also have the opportunity to showcase a product or service, and practice their pitch.

From 6 to 6:30 p.m., attendees are encouraged to bring prototypes, actual samples, or concept drafts for their new product or service to share with the group in an informal networking session/mini-tradeshow. As long as it is not bigger than a beer cooler, you do not have to notify the Workshop in advance.

Following Darin Gibby's presentation, there will be time for two or three "practice pitches" about a business or service. At the JeffCo Innovators' Workshop on January 10, you can present your 5 to 8-minute pitch (with or without slides) and get valuable feedback from our experts and the audience in a friendly setting.

To participate on January 10 with your pitch you must contact Deborah Deal in advance at  Deborah@IxPowerFoundation.org with your name, phone # and some information about what you want to pitch. Also make note if you will need a slide projector. (You can also show your product at the 6-6:30 pm networking time.) First come! First served! A spot will be held for the first three requesters.

Free, but please  RSVP online.

(If you are bringing more than yourself, and want to RSVP for several people without going through Meetup, go to  Eventbrite and enter search term "Inventing" or JeffCo Innovators Workshop.)

Public Meeting: WestConnect Planning & Environmental Linkages Study

A transportation study of portions of C-470, US 6, and CO 93 between Littleton and Boulder is nearly complete. The Colorado Department of Transportation and the WestConnect Coalition of agencies have been conducting a Planning and Environmental Linkages study to evaluate and develop short-term and long-term transportation alternatives, and to identify proposed improvements along C-470, between Kipling Street and Interstate 70, and along the US 6/CO 93 corridor between Golden and Boulder.

The PEL study evaluated options to reduce congestion, improve operational performance and safety, and address future transportation needs. Transportation improvement alternatives were developed and screened using local agency and public stakeholder input.

Draft study recommendations and evaluation of these improvements will be presented at the study's final round of public meetings this month. Recommendations vary by location, and include roadway lane, intersection/interchange, trail, technology, and corridor management improvements.

Members of the public are invited to attend one of the three upcoming public meetings to review the draft recommendations. The meetings will all present the same information in open house format, with a brief presentation. The one in Golden is on January 16. Please visit our website for other options in nearby communities.

An online option will be available beginning Jan. 16, which will include four videos presenting the public meeting graphic displays. To view the graphics and provide comments, visit  westconnectpel.codot.gov.

Free Radon Gas Test Kits Available through January

In Jefferson County, about half of homes tested have high levels of radon. Radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and there is a simple way to prevent it. In recognition of National Radon Action Month, Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) is providing free radon test kits to homeowners throughout the month of January to help keep families safe.

Read more about the dangers of radon and how you can pick up your free test kit on the City of Golden website.
Recycle Your Christmas Tree

Once the last present has been unwrapped and the tinsel and lights come off, your Christmas tree might look a little lonely. Why not give it a new life as mulch that nourishes Golden's gardens in 2018?

The City of Golden provides a quick and easy way for you to dispose of your Christmas trees after the ornaments and lights have come off. Drop off your trees now through Jan. 27 west of the intersection at Highway 93 & Golden Gate Canyon Road.

Please place your tree near the sign posted for tree recycling. Trees must be stripped of all ornaments, hardware, strings of lights and tinsel. This is for live trees only. The trees will be turned into mulch, which will eventually be available for free at the public pickup site on 11th Street, just west of the Clear Creek History Park.

For further details, contact the City of Golden Forestry office at 303-384-8141.
