HELLO FROM THE LEADERSHIP TEAM

What a joyful year we have had! This school year is quickly wrapping up which means a variety of activities are coming your way!  May will fly by and  June 7 will here before we know it.

Each year we wrap up the last day of school with a ceremonial bridge crossing that represents the students' journey through the year. The Bridging Ceremony will be on the last day of school starting  at 8:45 a.m. Depending on the weather, the bridging will either be on the field or in the gym. There will be more information to follow as we get closer to the event. Thank you for your flexibility.

Attendance awards will be presented at flag salute on  Monday, June 4 at 8:30 a.m. You will be notified the prior week if your child will be receiving one so you can arrange your schedule to attend.

Another thank you to all parents who have provided CCDS with their time and expertise. We appreciate all the ways in which you are able to support student learning. Our community is stronger because of each of you.

Warmly,                                                                                        Principal for the Day, Avery Teal!

A Message from Nurse Peggy

A gentle reminder for current kindergarten parents that California state law requires the 1st grade physical be completed by your doctor and turned in within the first 90 days of the next school year.

A dental exam is also required by the state of California and is due no later than May 31 of the kindergarten year.

All incoming 7th graders need the T-Dap booster (or an exemption signed by a physician) prior to the first day of school. In accordance with state law, students not meeting this requirement will not be able to attend class until the requirement is met.

The weather is quickly warming up and we would like to remind parents that students should be vigilant about the dangers of excessive heat and sun exposure. We encourage students to wear sunscreen to school, dress lightly and bring a canteen or water bottle to school every day. School staff is not allowed to apply sunscreen to students.

If you have any questions, please contact Nurse Peggy at 895-2650 ex. 210.

California Charter School Association Recognizes Signe Miller

Our own third grade teacher, Signe Miller, has been recognized as an Innovative Teacher Leader by CCSA and we couldn't be prouder! Signe is the epitome of a passionate, committed, and inspiring educator. At Chico Country Day, not only does she continually work on her own personal development and honing her craft, she elicits personal development from each of her students. She also encourages her colleagues to grow their capacity and think beyond the four walls of their classroom to provide authentic learning opportunities for students. Signe has led the way for excellence in curriculum choices, professional learning opportunities and is a collaborative, team player.

Congratulations Signe!

Did you know that TODAY marks the start of National Charter Schools Week? Every year, National Charter Schools Week gives us the chance to raise awareness about charter schools. We have a lot to celebrate and share!

Guest Speaker at Upcoming PTP General Meeting
The PTP will be holding the last General Meeting of the year on Wednesday,  May 9  in the Middle School Common Area at  6 p.m.   During this meeting they will be conducting elections and are excited to have guest speaker, Dena Kapsalis-Kelly!

Dena will be presenting information about "Helping your Child Navigate Positive Friendships and School Relationships." She is a former 5th grader and 6th grader teacher, CCDS mom, and school administrator who has been using evidence-based practices to support the social and emotional learning of students in both Austin, Texas and Butte County.

This presentation is designed to build awareness and provide guidance and support for students and their friendships. The workshop grew out of the recognition that friendship issues facing 5th and 6th graders sometimes interfere with their success, happiness, and security at school, emotional and otherwise. The complicated nature of friendships are often met with mixed messages from well-meaning parents and other adults. Walk away with more in your tool belt to support your developing pre-teen or teen with their friendships.

Holding a position on the PTP Board is a wonderful way to be involved in our school. Elections include the following positions:

Vice President (President Elect)
Committees Officer
Community Outreach Officer

Please contact Lesley Christopher if you have any questions regarding the above mentioned positions.

Childcare will be provided during this event.

Auction Earnings
The preliminary funds raised during our annual Auction for Excellence are $55,000.00.  We are still waiting on totals from the online auction before we determine what the final numbers look like.  Thank you to all the families that attended, volunteered, and donated as it truly takes our entire community to make this event a success.

Upcoming Events:

June 7 is the longstanding tradition, Bridging Ceremony.  Coffee will be provided by the PTP.  More details will come later this month.

Buy-It-Brick Campaign 1996-2016
In honor of our 20th anniversary last year, we are continuing our Buy-a-Brick campaign. These beautifully crafted, laser-engraved bricks are a way to celebrate your family's time on campus. This will be an on-going campaign that will not only add beauty to our campus, but will also serve as a visual history of our school and families.

There are flyers in the office, along with a sample brick. The bricks will be delivered in batches to be installed in several locations around campus. Support CCDS and honor your memories!

Autism Awareness Month

April was Autism Awareness month and many of our Chico Country Day staff members acknowledged this by wearing 'blue' every  Thursday

Autism is a spectrum disorder, that is now shown to impact 1 in 59 children. The more education our children (and adults) have about Autism, the better we can understand and include ALL students. Please take a moment to read this brief document for parents:  Helping Children Understand Autism
March Book Madness in 1st Grade
 A Summer Reading List

If you have younger kids, here's a awesome book list for summer reading. This list was compiled by some very special experts.

During the month of March, the first grade students participated in March Book Madness, with 16 amazing children's books!  Every day the students listened to two read-aloud books and then voted for their favorite book.  This happened for eight days until the "Elite Eight" were selected.  This process continued through the final four and finally the big read aloud.  Each class voted and a different book won in each classroom!  Here is a list of the wonderful books:

                                                                                        Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch
Red
The Jelly Donut Difference
Chalk
Lizard in the Park
How to Teach a Slug to Read
Emmanuel's Dream
The Bad Seed
The Potato Chip Champ
Those Shoes
Ordinary Mary's Extraordinary Deed
Strictly No Elephants

Christina Katerina

The winners by class were:
