March 2018 EWGA DC E-Blast
President's Message

Let the golfing season begin!

How exciting that springtime is officially here (sort of) and our golf season will soon be starting!

We are beginning our celebrations with a Kick-Off Brunch this Saturday, March 24. If you haven't registered for it yet, please hurry - you only have a couple days left to do so. Seriously, what better thing do you have to do on a non-golfing weather day, except to talk about golf with your fellow golfers?

There is some BIG news with our Association: EWGA is going through a lot of changes.  We will be talking about how it impacts our Chapter and all of us.

Next: the League registration is open!!!  Go and sign up for your regular leagues and all those you might be hitting up throughout the season.

Laurel Hills Kick-Off Weekend Event is April 7.  Only ten days left to register. Invite your friends!  Invite your family!  Invite your ringers!  The event is open to everyone.  Form your own foursome and have fun. The event includes dinner, so count on a fun afternoon and a fun dinner.

See you all this Saturday, March 24!

Snjezana Arthur
President

New EWGA DC Leagues for 2018

Broad Run Golf and Practice Facility, Bristow, VA

For those of you that want to play on Sundays but can't find the time for a full 18 holes, this is the league for you. This year we have a new Virginia 9-hole Sunday league starting 6 May, playing the 1st and 3rd Sundays each month, with 1:30pm consecutive tee times. G olfers will find a 75 station, heated all-weather driving range complete with a 2 acre short game practice area and a 10,000 square foot putting area. But it is the golf course that sets Broad Run Golf apart from other practice facilities. Broad Run Golf offers a very challenging, par 35 golf course designed by the renowned architect Rick Jacobson. Green tees offer a rating of 63.2 and slope of 105, white tee is 60.8 and 100 slope. For a little before or after round fun, try the mini-golf course!

Blue Mash Golf Course, Laytonsville, MD

Designed by world renowned architect Arthur Hills, Blus Mash features a delightful mix of links style, parkland, wooded areas, and water holes.  There are no forced carries so it is manageable for beginners and high handicap golfers, and low handicap golfers will find its length from the back tees, strategic bunker placement, and devilish, well protected greens plenty of challenge. With an interesting historical background, the land was inhabited by freed slaves who also made it a stop on the Underground Railroad, hiding runaway slaves on their way north. The blue stars and gold stripes logo of the Laytonsville golf course refers to the property's historic function as a stop on the long journey to freedom.

Glenn Dale Golf Club, Glenn Dale, MD

EWGA DC has had a Sunday league at Glenn Dale for years - now we add a 9-hole Monday league.  Glenn Dale is known for it's shortness in length and dramatically pitched greens which will put a premium on your short game. If there is one thing to remember when playing Glenn Dale it's NEVER be above the pin! The white tee rating is 68.0 with a slope of 119 and the red tee are 67.8 and 120. This league begins 16 April with tee times starting at 5:30pm.

New Day (Friday) for Herndon Centennial Golf Club, Herndon, VA

This long-time favorite to many EWGA DC players, we are moving to a different night to play - Fridays, due to inability to get earlier tee times on Wednesdays.  The Herndon Centennial course features 6,445 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 71. The course rating is 68.7 and it has a slope rating of 116 on Bent grass. Designed by Edmund B. Ault, the Herndon Centennial golf course opened in 1979. This course is great for both walkers and cart riders.  The league begins its season on May 1, with tee times starting at 5:10pm.

15th Annual  Red  Tee Golf Tournament for the American  Red   Cross

Support the 15th Annual Red Tee Golf Tournament, benefitting the American Red Cross, on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at The Golf Club at Lansdowne in Lansdowne, Virginia. We are actively involved in helping to raise attention for this event and would like your help.

Dollars contributed to the American Red Cross help you and your neighbors prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies, large and small. 2018 Play for P.I.N.K. Golf Tournament
REGISTRATION is open!

Our annual Play for P.I.N.K. (PfP) Tournament will be held at the Westfields Golf Course in Clifton, Virginia on August 26, 2018.  Proceeds raised by our Chapter will be sent to the PfP organization that in turn donates all to the Breast Cancer Research Fund.  The tournament is open to ALL (males and non-members welcome).  Given many of us have been touched by breast cancer in some fashion, join us for a day filled of fun while simultaneously donating to this noteworthy event.

The price is $120 per person and includes greens and cart fees, practice balls, on-course towel service, golf bag handling, clubs cleaned post-round, and post round Black Tee Buffet dinner.  We will play a Shamble format (best gross and net score per hole) with a shotgun start at 1:30pm.  Dinner and tournament prizes will be held after course play.

Form your own foursome or sign up as a single and we will pair you with a foursome.  A team captain is preferred, as information will be communicated through all Captains.  Be creative with your team name, and remember to DRESS IN PINK!   Registration will close once the maximum of 144 participants is reached.

A number of fun activities are planned for the day.  We will have a chipping and putting contest with first and second place prizes awarded; various skill challenges with prizes (longest drive (M/F), closest to the pin (M/F); a 50/50 pot of gold raffle; a regular raffle; and a silent auction.  A photographer will be on site and will take team photos on a selected tee box as well as photos throughout the day.

Other ways to get involved in the tournament include sponsoring a hole.  Hole Sponsor signs cost $100 and include the sign with donor's name, logo or message, and five 50/50 raffle tickets.   Donations to the regular raffle are welcome.  The PfP Committee would accept golf-related items or your favorite bottles of wine/liquor.  You can also make a one-time cash donation by contacting the Event Captain below.  Finally, events like this are not successful without the help of volunteers on the day of the event.  If you are interested in helping with the PfP planning efforts or volunteering on the day of the tournament, contact the Event Captain.

Missing Important Emails? Check Your Folders and Make Senders Safe
We have discovered that some members who have been missing important  EWGA related emails, found them in their Spam (Junk) and other email folders. If you have a Gmail account, many  EWGA emails end up in the "Promotions" folder.  You can make the  EWGA senders safe on your email account, which usually takes care of the problem.  Need assistance?  Contact ____________ (local Chapter contact)
