On February 20-21, CSG West Director, Edgar Ruiz, along with CSG West staff visited 'The Beehive State' of Utah. During the visit, CSG West met with a number of legislators including leadership and alumni of the Western Legislative Academy (WLA). A 'meet and greet' breakfast was also hosted to promote the 71st CSG West Annual Meeting that will take place in Snowbird, UT from September 11th-15th, 2018.
2018 marked the start of the 63rd legislative session which commenced January 22nd and closed (sine die) on March 8th. During the 45-day session legislators passed a total of 534 bills. A number of policy topics were considered. Some of the most prominent topics under consideration during the visit included education funding, transportation, and public health/safety.
On February 28 and March 1 of this year CSG West Director, Edgar Ruiz, and CSG West staff Rich Lindsey, visited the Wyoming Capitol where they met with legislative leaders to hear about policy challenges facing the state and to discuss CSG West programming, including the Western Legislative Academy (WLA) and the upcoming annual meeting in Utah in September.
Key visits involved a joint meeting with the Speaker of the House and President of the Senate, the Legislative Service Director, Chief of Staff to the Governor, and a luncheon with WLA alumni and eligible applicants. Also joining Mr. Ruiz during the visit was Marc Pelka, the Deputy Director of Programs State Initiatives for the CSG Justice Center.
