St. Michael's Academy
  :

It was a busy week here at St. Michael's, despite yet another snow day. We have completed our first week of IOWA testing and are preparing for our second week. Thank you to all the parents who helped their children to prepare and to be well rested.  We have repeated the preparation tips farther down in the newsletter in case you missed them last week.

Our eighth grade students have been working hard practicing and preparing for their live Stations of the Cross presentation.  We invite everyone to join us on Wednesday, March 28th at either 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. (there are two performances) for this very special event. You won't want to miss it.

On a lighter note, the students had fun today wearing their green to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.  You can see photos farther down in the newsletter. If you see a first grader, ask them if they caught any leprechauns!

Enjoy a nice weekend. Let's hope the next round of snow misses us!

Peace,

Ann E. Dougal
Principal

Preparing for Poetry Café

Eighth Grade is busy preparing for one of its largest showcase events of the year, Poetry Café, which will be held here at St. Michael's on April 4. Students are working on writing their own original pieces which will reflect on themselves and group- selected themes. A large variety of poetry types have been explored and students are becoming quite the poets.

While Poetry Café is a capstone event for the eighth grade, the entire middle level participates. Sixth grade students create table level poetry for guests to enjoy throughout the evening of the event, as well as provide the refreshments for intermission. Seventh grade students complete a poet research project and present both biographical and poetry works by a large variety of authors using tri-fold presentation boards. These boards are used to help create the café environment for the event, while eighth grade students are front and center with oral interpretations of their original work.

April is National Poetry Month and St. Michael's celebrates poetry throughout all the grades. During a student's tenure at St. Michael's Academy, they read, write, and experience a variety of poetry. Our program exposes students to the richness of the written word, and culminates in a presentation that not only includes recitations, original works, and presentation skills, but also the use of technology to produce individual poetry booklets.

At St. Michael's, we strive to educate the whole child. Incorporating poetry into the curriculum is just one of the many ways we accomplish that goal.

Test Prep

Getting Off On The Right Foot

We still have another week of IOWA testing. Just a reminder of a few guidelines to help your child get off on the right foot:

- Make sure your children have eaten well on test days. Studies suggest that good nutrition is related to improved attention and concentration.

- Help your children by encouraging a good night's rest before exams. Children who are tired will have difficulty focusing on their work.

- Make the morning of test days pleasant. Stress will impair your children's ability to perform their best.

- Remind your children to dress comfortably, perhaps in layers, so that they are able to adjust to the temperature in the room.

- Ensure that your children make it to school on-time so that they do not miss any instructions and are allowed ample time to settle in and relax before the test begins.

- Don't be too anxious about your children's test scores. Although it is important to let them know that the tests should be taken seriously, it is also important not to increase test-taking anxiety.

- Don't underestimate your influence on your children. Taking an interest in what they are doing at school and helping them prepare for tests will certainly have a positive impact on them!

 Lost and Found

Lost and Found Bin Overflowing!

You may not even know it...you may have not noticed... but many students have lost many things!  Please check the lost and found bin located outside the cafeteria entrance.  It is overflowing with items including new SMA sweatshirts, lunch boxes, new snow boots, hats, gloves, mittens, scarfs...you name it.  Please check the box is your child is missing anything.  Unclaimed items will be donated.

This also serves as a great reminder to WRITE your child's name in all of their possessions.

  Food  For Thought
