BobBlast #238

Let's Paint Something Today.

Welcome back to another BobBlast.

Do you get the urge to paint today... but don't know what to paint? Well this is
what  I do:  Paint something . Anything . Usually a simple object, a fruit, a cup.
Anything simple.

Look at a simple object as a simple still life with a strong, single light source and paint what you see. Paint it three times. Three small paper pieces - 8x10 inches, 9x12 inches - your choice. These are my morning warm ups, my "practice" pieces. When given the opportunity, I practice this routine every morning before I work on larger paper and canvas pieces.

This practice time is a relaxed way to teach yourself to paint looser, wetter and freer. Doesn't take long - and you have everything to gain!

I begin on a clean table, covered with 4 mil thick plastic. The table now becomes my palette. Squeeze out dollops of fresh acrylic paint - including black and white. I start by wiping the mid tone of your dominant color. Let dry.

Today, my three warm up paintings will be a single pineapple. I start loose and abstract all over the surface (on top of the mid tone) with a variety of colors. Then I begin the reductive technique of negative shape painting - I paint away any parts that don't look like a pineapple!

You will see in the video demo that I stress the importance of a strong light source. With that in mind, now you will know where to place the darks and lights - the shadows and hot spots - for a dramatic, eye-popping interpretation and impression of a single pineapple.

I see a new series of fruits and vegetables in your future...

Thanks again for watching and telling your friends!
