STAFF APPRECIATION CHILI LUNCH RECEIVES WARM WELCOME

On Wednesday, January 16, the 6th grade family volunteers hosted a delicious Winter Chili Cook-Off meal for the IS Staff Appreciation Luncheon. The staff enjoyed different varieties of chili, salad, baked potatoes, chips, fruit trays, and yummy deserts.

Thank you to the fabulous 6th grade families for providing food and assistance.
The next Staff Appreciation Lunch will be hosted by Chinese families on February 6. If you are interested in helping, please sign up here . If you are interested in becoming part of the planning committee, please contact Wei Xiong, [email protected] .
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
 
International School is hosting the Eastshore Solo and Ensemble Festival on Saturday, January 26. ISPTSA is willing to host a concession table between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM to serve items to hungry kids and parents. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Meribeth, [email protected].
The International School is also hosting the College Conference with Bellevue High School and Interlake High School on Thursday, February 7. One to two parents are needed to coordinate food for the event. The school district is providing the main dish, so we need appetizers, salads, fruit, and desserts to serve 40 people. If you would like to help coordinate food for this college event using SignUpGenius, please contact [email protected].

BITE OF IS 2019

Sign up by January 26 to receive an additional extra ticket!

We need minimum of 50 booth hosts to make this event successful. Sign up for a booth by filling out this form online, or printing it out and dropping it off in the front office. 

Each booth host will receive one ticket for the event.

International Foods Buffet
Friday, February 8, 6:00-8:00 PM, IS Gym
Ticket: $10 per person  (suggested donation)

Tickets can be purchased in the front office or at the door on the day of the event.

Join the International School community for our annual fundraiser. 
This year, all proceeds will benefit the  BRAC  organization, an international non-profit helping the nearly million Rohingya who fled Myanmar last year and are in refugee camps in Bangladesh.

IMPORTANT! JANUARY 18-25—SPECIAL SCHEDULE!

For high schoolers, this is Finals Week. On Wednesday, 1/23, and Friday, 1/25, high schoolers will be dismissed for independent study at 11:05 AM. 

Middle schoolers will also follow the special schedule, but there is no early release for them. 

Some IMT1, IMT2, and AVID classes will take advantage of the long class period with a walking field trip to Uwajimaya. Those students were assigned a $10 fee.

MIDDLE SCHOOL PARENT NIGHTS—SAVE THE DATE!

  • 6th Grade: Thursday, March 7, 6:00-7:00 PM, IS Library
  • 7th Grade: Tuesday, February 26, 6:00-7:00 PM, IS Library—The topic will be Vaping and Other Common Substance Abuse in Middle School and will be presented by a certified substance abuse counselor through Youth Eastside Services. Parents of students of all grades are welcome.
  • 8th Grade: *NEW DATE* Monday, February 11, 6:00-7:00 PM, IS LibraryFocus will be on transitioning to high school.

INTERNATIONAL HOSTING EASTSHORE SOLO AND ENSEMBLE FESTIVALS

International is hosting the Eastshore Solo and Ensemble Festivals this year. The Instrumental day will be at International on Saturday, January 26, and the Vocal day will be at Bellevue Christian School on Saturday, February 2. 

This is a huge event that will be taking over the whole International campus with students from Bellevue, Issaquah, Mercer Island, Snoqualmie Valley, and Riverview School Districts. One or two students from each instrumental category will be selected to move on to compete in the WIAA/WMEA State Solo and Ensemble Competitions later this spring.

ANGST: RAISING AWARENESS AROUND ANXIETY
Two Bellevue Screenings in February

The Bellevue Schools Foundation, in partnership with Medina, Chinook and Odle I-Connect, and Chinook Middle School, is hosting a screening of an important film,  Angst , created to start community conversations about anxiety and provide tools, resources, and hope.
 
IndieFlix, a leading independent online streaming platform, is sparking a global conversation about anxiety through screenings of its timely documentary,  Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety

Chinook Middle School will host a special screening of the documentary to open up a dialogue between local families, community leaders, and experts. The event will feature a viewing of the 56-minute film followed by an informative panel discussion. Children over age 10 are welcome to attend with an adult.

TILLICUM PTA PRESENTS PARENT EDUCATIONAL PANEL DISCUSSION ON VAPING

Thursday, January 17, 7:00-8:00 PM, Tillicum Middle School Library
 
Come learn what vaping is, why it is so dangerous and addictive, and why you should be talking with your kids about it now. Hear from behavioral and health specialists, school staff, and current high school students sharing their experiences. While this presentation will be aimed at parents, students are welcome to attend. Childcare and light refreshments provided. More info here.
2019 EDUCATION CONNECTION SERIES

Creating Balance for your Child with Dr. Laura Kastner
 
Join author and clinical psychologist Laura Kastner on January 24, 2019 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM for a presentation that will benefit every parent—learning  how to combat the student stress epidemic . With wisdom and humor, Dr. Kastner explores the paramount importance of social and emotional health on our children's lives and provides guidance on topics including: 
  • The effects of toxic stress on lifelong physical/mental health,
  • Replacing unhealthy coping with positive, adaptive coping strategies,
  • Keys to de-stressing: creating healthy balance and more,
  • Developmental essentials for a successful launch to adulthood,
  • Helping your child thrive, not just survive.

Secondary Health teachers will be hosting a F.L.A.S.H. (Family Life and Sexual Health) and HIV/AIDS curriculum preview evening. This is an opportunity for Health students and/or parents/guardians to be introduced to/preview the curriculum and ask questions about the sexual health curriculum prior to
classroom instruction and receive modification/opt out options if necessary.
