MOA Website and event registration upgrade
The Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) has transitioned to a new website and membership database. Visit
www.domoa.org to view the new website design. The system has sent all MOA members an email to reset their password for the new site.
The new system will provide a more intuitive environment making it easier to access profile information, pay membership dues and register for events.
With the new system, the MOA website can detect whether you are using a computer, tablet or smartphone, and adjust the display to fit your device. This makes it easy to login from mobile devices and register for events.
The transition to the new member login areas is complete, but we have work to do on some parts of the website displays. We appreciate your patience and we look forward to a more efficient system in 2018.

New laws and regulations for 2018:
Opioid Alert and Analysis
On December 27, 2017, several new requirements aimed at combating the opioid epidemic were signed into law by Lt. Governor Brian Calley (see below). The Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA), the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) and the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) have partnered to offer an analysis of the new requirements, the implications and details on enforcement.

Survey and Feedback
The MOA is working within a collaborative group that has met with the Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) to voice our concerns over the legislation being passed without the input of healthcare providers. It is vital that the voice of healthcare providers is heard. The MOA has created a brief survey to gain feedback from our membership.

Now Accepting Resolutions for House of Delegates
The 2018 Michigan Osteopathic Association House of Delegates will meet on Thursday, May 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Westin Southfield Detroit. If you have resolutions you wish to submit to the 2018 House of Delegates, you can now do so via the MOA website.

(Note: You must be logged in to access the House of Delegates web page).
Any MOA member in good standing may author a resolution; however, introduction of resolutions to the House of Delegates is limited to delegates, alternate-seated delegates, component associations, MOA Departments, Councils, or Board of Trustees. Non-delegate status members in good standing should contact their component association for assistance in identifying an appropriate channel for resolution introduction.
Work with your component society if you are interested in submitting a resolution or serving as a delegate. The deadline for submitting resolutions, and delegate names, is March 14, 2018.

Outstanding Resident of the Year Award
Do you know an outstanding resident to nominate for the 2018 Resident of the Year? We need to hear from you! The MOA is looking to recognize and honor outstanding osteopathic residents from Michigan who go above and beyond to bring a sense of pride to the profession by exhibiting the exemplary characteristics of an osteopathic physician.
One recipient will be presented with the $1,000 award during the MOA's House of Delegates, which will be held during the 119th Annual Spring Scientific Convention, May 17-20, 2018. The recipient will be notified by April 1, 2018.

The AOA's ICYMI: physician suicides, ER costs, physician shortages

1. What I've learned from my tally of 757 doctor suicides
Pamela Wible, MD, calls attention to the growing epidemic of physician suicides. She argues that ignoring the problem is making it worse and medical institutions need to step up and support the mental health of physicians, residents and students.
2. An ER visit, a $12,000 bill-and a health insurer that wouldn't pay
Anthem Health Insurance is drawing a line in the sand. Patients will be responsible for ER costs when it's not an emergency. Some emergency medicine physicians believe this may discourage patients from using emergency services and getting necessary care.
3. Surge in DO students could help ease physician shortage
Osteopathic medical students are on the rise. About 1 in 4 medical students attend an osteopathic college. They are set to help aid the primary care provider shortage in the U.S.

The Detroit Medical Orchestra (DMO) will perform the "The Russian Connection" on Sunday, February 11th at 4 p.m. at the Community Arts Auditorium, on the campus of Wayne State University.
Program:
RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Russian Easter Overture
BORODIN In the Steppes of Central Asia
TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 2, Op. 17 in C minor (Little Russian)
The concerts are free and open to the public. Some street parking is available on Cass St., but please plan ahead to allow time for parking. Additional parking is available at the Detroit Historical Museum, for a $7.00 donation to the museum.
The DMO will be partnering with Urban Stringz for this concert. At this performance, donations will be collected to benefit the transformative music education programs provided by Urban Stringz to Detroit youth.
Join us after the concert for a light afterglow, then we'll continue at Traffic Jam and Snug, where a portion of your order will be donated back to the orchestra! More details in the concert programs.
NOTE: The OCOMA bus trip to this DMO performance has been cancelled.
