Despite snow and ice, USM LAC Senior College members enjoyed many oneday short winter classes on a variety of subjects. From travelogues to painting, issues of health to historical insights, and three days of playing games both old and new, members had fun exploring new ideas.
Classes featuring trips to warm, sunny places were naturally popular. The session began with Alan Treworgy's presentation on "Following the Ancient Silk Road in Western China". Other warm countries 'visited' included: China, Egypt, Zambia, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
Meanwhile, other members were out and about with the club activities. Cross Country ski club members visited Pinelands and have plans for each week through February and March. Outdoor Adventure club put on their snowshoes to go exploring. Theater club is attending the "Radio Days" play in Monmouth, and the Dine Around club continues its monthly exploration of interesting meals in the greater LA area.

Senior College at Belfast is pleased to announce the 16th Annual Senior College Festival of Art scheduled for June 7-10, 2018.
Please mark your calendars and plan to join the fun!
Maine artists age 50 and up are invited to exhibit
Maine artists age 50 and up are invited to exhibit a piece of their artwork in this 4-day non-juried exhibit held at the UMaine Hutchinson Center in Belfast. Professional or amateur, first-time exhibitor or nationally known artist, all are welcome.
Registration
The Registration Period for the 16th Annual Senior College Festival of Art is March 1 thru 31, 2018. Registration forms and additional information are available via email, or you may leave a message at 207-338-8033, or go to our Senior College web site and download the form and information.
Artwork drop off & delivery Information
Participating artists must drop off, or arrange for someone to deliver, their artwork to the Hutchinson Center in Belfast on Wednesday, June 6, between 5-7 p.m. Artwork must be picked-up at the conclusion of the Festival, between~3 and 4 pm on Sunday, June 10th.

To Your Health to Present "Cooking with Dave Nivus" on March 15
Dave Nivus
Dave Nivus, co-owner of the Good Food Store and Catering Company, will present a program on "Soups, Stews and Chowder" on Thursday, March 15, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm at the West Parish Congregational Church in the basement Dining Room. The program is held in observance of National Nutrition Month and is sponsored by To Your Health of Western Mountains Senior College.
Nivus will discuss how to use food economically to create more meals and will give basic recipes for broths, cream soups and chowders. He will share some of his favorite recipes with the audience.
Nivus attended the University of Maine in Business and Computers. He worked in the hospitality industry as a teenager and through college. While he enjoyed working with computers, he missed the people aspect of the hospitality industry and has been working in it ever since. He encourages people "not to be afraid to try new foods, adding his popular saying, 'Food is Food; it all cooks.'"
Nivus and his wife, Heather, opened The Good Food Store 24 years ago, as a natural and specialty grocery store. The full-time catering business followed at later date. Nivus is also considered by many as the local "Wine Connoisseur," and has offered many wine tasting events throughout the area.
In 1991 he and Heather started the annual pre-Thanksgiving "Turkey Tuesday." Over the years, the event has grown and is highly anticipated and enjoyed by many area residents. With so many people in attendance and the event held in a season of giving, donations are accepted for the Bethel Food Pantry.
The program on March 15 is sponsored as a community service by To Your Health of WMSC with the collaboration of Bethel Family Health Center and MSAD#44/Continuing Education. It is free and open to the public.

Bees In Your Maine Garden

On Friday, March 9th, USM LAC Senior College will host a luncheon featuring Master Gardener Jean Vose. She will speak about bees and other insect pollinators crucial to our food supply.
Honeybees from across the country have been subject to stress from pesticides and a virus that causes colony collapse. What role does the backyard gardener have in helping to sustain their population? How do you identify other beneficial insects? How can your yard and garden practices encourage survival of these pollinators? Illustrated with slides and handouts for the audience, Jean will describe techniques to promote and welcome the bees in your neighborhood.

Master Gardener Jean Vose
|
Jean Vose is a Knox and Lincoln counties Master Gardener, certified horticulturalist and backyard beekeeper living in Nobleboro. Her 10 acres of mixed habitat feature native plants as well as gardens for fruits and vegetables. A beekeeper since 1986, she manages four hives for pollination and honey. She serves on the Knox Lincoln County Soil and Water Conservation District and is a co-founder of the Knox-Lincoln County Beekeepers Association.
The public is invited to join members of Senior College for this presentation at the Lewiston Campus, University of Southern Maine, 50 Westminster Street, room 170. If you wish to have lunch, it is $8.00 by reservation only. Call 207-753-6510 before NOON Wednesday, March 7th. On March 9th, doors open at 11:30, talk begins at 12:00.

"Concerts at Jewett"
Maine-ly Harmony and Back Bay Four will Perform at UMA Jewett Auditorium, Sunday, Sunday, March 11, 2018, 2PM. (Snow date Mar. 18)
These two a cappella groups were very well received when "Concerts at Jewett" featured them in 2015, and they are returning with even more performances and awards to their credit - a feel-good afternoon of skilled harmony and opportunities to sing along with over thirty talented vocalists!
Maine-ly Harmony, of Gardiner, Maine
Maine-ly Harmony is an organization of women of all ages and from all over central Maine. Members come together to blend their voices in the a cappella barbershop harmony of singing, a style of four-part unaccompanied singing.
The Back Bay Four, a men's Championship Barbershop Quartet, are members of the Portland Downeasters Chorus.
In addition to other venues around the state, performers from Maine-ly Harmony and the Back Bay Four often sing for residents of retirement homes, veterans homes and nursing homes.

Beyond the Cockpit
Lecture by Col. Jen Fullmer
Col. Jen Fullmer, head of "Boots to Roots" and a 24-year veteran of the U. S. Air Force, works to assist active duty military members to transition to Maine. Jen is a command pilot with more than 2,500 hours on the B-1 bomber including 90 combat missions in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Singing Songs of the 40's-60's
Lecture by Monica Grabin
Monica Grabin, musician and historian, specializes in how American history is reflected in song. She plays guitar, banjo, and autoharp and various percussion instruments. Her focus in this YCSC program will be on music of the 50's and 60's, and a few from "the greatest decade of American songwriting-the 40's
Lecture Times
Morning lectures take place from 9:30-11:30, followed by lunch and a second lecture, given from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m.
Location
All winter lectures will be given at Denis Hall on the campus of the Brothers of Christian Instruction, 133 Shaker Hill Road, Alfred (off Route 202).
Fee (lunch included!)
The fee for each day's program is $20 for York County Senior College members, $25 for non-members, payable at the door by cash or check made payable to the York County Shelter Program, and includes lunch, as well as coffee breaks.
Weather
Should classes be cancelled on account of weather, notice will be given on local TV stations and may be heard on the YCSC answering machine (207-282-4030).
