NO SCHOOL This Friday 9/25 - Teacher Work Day!
Raven Report: September 23, 2020
Message from Head of School

Greetings Summit Community,

I want to thank everyone for their diligence, cooperation, and open communication as we navigate this new school year together. I continue to be amazed and impressed by the resilience of our students, faculty, parents, and greater community. We have made it to our sixth week of seated instruction. This is an incredible accomplishment, and it could not be possible without the vigilance of our parent community.

As we enter cold and flu season, please continue to inform administration of any absences due to illness, and, as always, if your child or anyone in your household is not feeling well, please stay home. We are happy to connect any families with our Hybrid Learning Coordinator, so we can all continue learning safely, wherever we are.

Thank you for your continued support of The Summit. I am so grateful for our tight-knit community, and your dedication to health, wellness, and safety on our campus, so we can all continue learning together!

With much appreciation,

Dr. Katie Heet

The Summit Online Auction on Friday 10/30

Mark your calendars for Friday, October 30th, from 7:30-9:00 p.m. for The Summit's Online Auction!

Normally, at this time of year, The Summit Development Office is in full swing planning for our fall fundraising event, The Gala. This year, we're trying something different.

Starting on Friday, October 23rd, The Summit Fall Online Auction will open and run until the evening of October 30th. That night, we will host a livestream event as bidding times end for auction items.

The auction will contain many of the fun items we have had in past Gala auctions, as well as some clever new twists. Details will be shared in the next few weeks as we ramp up to our launch date on Friday, October 23rd!

We are so grateful to have this opportunity to get together as a community, raise some important funds for the school, and try something new with all of you.

For questions, or to volunteer to help with this event, please contact Vince Currao, Development Officer.

FAQs:

How much are they?
Each mum voucher is $12 and is good for one 2-gallon jumbo size hardy mum.

Where do I get my mums?
Once you have received your printed vouchers, take them to either Wheeler Gardens locations during their regular business hours. Visit www.wheelergardens.com for more information.

Where is Wheeler Gardens located?
They have two locations. One is located at 1925 S. Bedford Ave in Springfield; close to the east Sam's Club. The other is located at 454 State Highway EE in Ozark.

What colors do they have?
They have several shades of bronze, orange, white, purple, red, and yellow. All colors available at both locations.

How do I pay for the mums?

Teacher Feature: Mrs. James
Mrs. James with the 5th grade class on the First Day of School.

What is your name?
Kendra James

What do you teach at The Summit?
5th Grade

How long have you been working in education?
I have been working in education for 4 years.

Where did you go to college?
University of Central Arkansas.

What was your major?
Bachelor of Science in Middle Level Education and Master's in the Advanced Studies of Teacher Leadership.

When you were in school, what was your favorite subject?
I always really loved science, social studies, and art.

Now that you're a teacher, what is your favorite lesson to teach?
As a teacher, my favorite lesson to teach is on cells (science) and the American Revolution (social studies). Both lessons include really engaging activities that my students always enjoy. When they're having a lot of fun, it's really fun to watch!

What made you want to become a teacher?
I wanted to become a teacher for as long as I can remember. I have lots of siblings, so I've always been the "helper" type. I think teaching gives me an opportunity to serve others in a way that is so fulfilling to me. I love it!

What is your favorite thing about teaching at The Summit?
My favorite aspect of The Summit is easily the community that surrounds me. All of the faculty, staff, families, and especially the students have been so welcoming and helpful. I'm so happy and grateful to be among such incredible people!

What makes a good day at school?
A good day at school would be my students feeling safe, comfortable, cared for, and lots of laughter (my favorite part because they're SO funny)!

If you could take your class on a field trip anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
If I could take my class anywhere in the world, I would take them to an amusement park. Any opportunity to bond, have fun, and create memories would be valuable and meaningful to me. Plus, I absolutely love roller coasters, so I imagine that would be a blast!

If you had a time machine, what period of time would you travel to (or the future)?
If I could travel in time, I would go back to my childhood and take lots of pictures and videos. I think it would be fun to have those special memories.

What's something you think everyone should try at least once?
Skydiving! I haven't done it yet, but it's definitely on my bucket list.

What is the next book on your "to be read" list?
The next book on my list is the 5th grade book club book, Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere, and lots of baby books that my one-year-old received for his birthday earlier this month.

Needed: Clorox Wipes

Summit Community, we need your help! While we continue to purchase Clorox wipes as available, we could use help from our community to maintain our stock levels given quantity limitations in stores. We would greatly appreciate any donations of Clorox wipes you may have, or if you are able to pick some up while out shopping.

Thank you for your continued support!
Now Accepting Applications!

The Summit is still accepting applications for the 2020-2021 school year! We have virtual admissions options and screenings flexible for a variety of family schedules. If you know someone who would love to learn at The Summit, please contact Amy Maas, Summit Admissions Officer.

Don't forget Family Referral Bonuses! Current Summit families who refer a new student to The Summit could receive up to $500 in Growth Fund credit! Email Amy for more details.
Family Business Directory

The Summit will be updating the Family Business Directory for the 2020-2021 school year. The Summit uses the Family Business Directory to build relationships within The Summit community by offering families with businesses the opportunity to list their business information. This directory allows our families to support one another through referrals and patronage.

Participation is completely optional and free of charge. Teachers also use the directory as a reference for potential guest speakers in their classrooms and/or field trip opportunities. If you are interested in being listed in the Family Business Directory, please use this link to submit your information.
