   Let's GO

For more than a decade, the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals (NAPO) has been celebrating and promoting Get Organized, or GO Month, every January. At the start of each new year, the tradition of resolving to get organized is among the most popular of resolutions. The value of being organized is immeasurable. It reduces stress, saves time and money, increases efficiency and boosts productivity.
The desire to live a simpler life-less emphasis on the stuff and more emphasis on the more important aspects of our lives-is a popular mindset and budding lifestyle. And at this time of year, we all seem eager to fulfill this desire.

Retailers lure us in with promises of being organized if only we purchase this, that, or the other thing-all at discounted prices. Magazine covers boast at least one headline to grab our attention about getting organized accompanied by photos of pretty baskets neatly arranged on a shelf. We devour the information and vow that we, too, will be organized this year.
Worth It

Sometimes the most difficult part of getting organized is getting started. Facing down a room full    of stuff accumulated over the years can be daunting. Decluttering and organizing, while well       worth the effort, can also feel overwhelming. Before you throw up your hands and walk away,   remember these few guidelines:

  • Be clear about what you want to accomplish.
  • Know the difference between cleaning, decluttering and organizing. While these are all worthy contenders, the tasks necessary for each will take you down very different paths.
  • Be discerning. Let every decision about what to keep and what to let go support your goal.
  • Define the purpose of the project area and ensure that purpose is served with what you include in that space.
  • Maintenance is key. An organized space can only stay organized with consistent attention.
Making resolutions at the start of the new year is a long-held tradition, but any time is a good time to get organized. Out with the old clutter and in with the new organization. Happy New Year and...
