What's all the talk about Southport Marina? See for yourself:

A "Must" stop for either ICW or offshore cruisers, 2018-04-20

Captain:  Mike Zimet, ORIENTAL
5-Stars

Southport Marina offers a first class experience. Great docks (although passing traffic can make it bit rolly during the day), experienced dock hands, a great welcome package, and clean and accessible showers and laundry, close access to provisioning and good eats, and perhaps the best reason to stop is the nightly weather and navigation brief given by retired USN Meteorologist Hank Pomeranz. I have attended 4 briefings over the past several cruising seasons and these briefs and the user friendly handout are simply indispensable. Kudos to Southport and Zimmerman for their sponsorship. Even for those vessels not cruising the ICW, the offshore aspects of the weather and navigation briefs are helpful for route planning and crew peace of mind. Southport is a great stop and made mandatory due to the ICW migration season briefings (Spring and Fall migration seasons).

I am a bit reluctant to give them five stars because they might become so popular that I might have a problem reserving a slip in the future. It's a great marina and a lovely town.

The ONLY negative about this marina is that at times it can be exposed to wind-generated wave action. Otherwise, the entire staff is very professional and willing to accommodate. Facilities such as the showers, laundry room, ship store, fuel dock, picnic and gathering areas are extremely well looked after. The downtown area is a convenient walk to the North Carolina Maritime Museum, cafes, stores, and numerous restaurants. A great location to have friends or family come to spend some time with you while you're cruising.

Yes this place costs more (but not outrageous). But the location can't be beat if you want to see Southport, or just eat out.

If you arrive when the dock crew is there, you are in luck as the guys are the best and very skilled. They try to leave the south facing open till the last as it is easiest to get into unassisted if the dock crew have gone home. This spot can be a little rocky as it is open to the ICW and the south breeze, so use use a few extra bumpers for a peaceful night.

The laundry was clean and working. Wifi at the end of the dock was weak, but OK up by the laundry (if you want to stream a movie while the cloths cycle through the wash.)

Wifi strength was only complaint.

Not only is this marina well appointed and close to town, the staff is amazingly helpful. Not to be missed is a FREE seminar each night on what to expect in navigating the Cape Fear River and the ICW up to Norfolk. Hank gives full weather forecasts and areas to beware of for your trip. These seminars are every night for two weeks in the spring and again in the fall.

Thank you for all the positive feedback from our slip holders and transient customers we have been receiving on Active Captain, Waterway Guide, and Salty Southeast Cruisers' Net...please continue to let us know how we are doing!

How to install soundproofing for quieter cruising

For most, boats are a way to escape the rat race of terrestrial life and an opportunity to enjoy time with family and friends on the water. Relaxing can be difficult, however, when you have to scream over engine or generator noise during conversations or while lying awake at night, listening to the melodious hum of an air conditioning unit. Installation of soundproofing can make a huge difference in onboard noise reduction. Here's how to transform the hullabaloo of your boat into the peace and tranquility of a floating Zen garden.

Kentucky Kiss Cocktail Recipe

  • Maker's Mark Bourbon
  • Strawberry puree
  • Lemon Juice
  • Maple Syrup
  • Strawberry
  • Soda
  • Shaker
  • Cocktail glass
  1. Gather the ingredients. To make a Kentucky Kiss cocktail you will need a fine Bourban, preferably Maker's Mark, strawberry puree, lemon juice, maple syrup, and soda. This recipe is pretty specific, but you don't have to use Maker's Mark Bourbon if you prefer another brand. The type of maple syrup generally isn't specified so you have a free hand there.
  2. Quantities. To make a Kentucky Kiss cocktail pour two ounces of Maker's Mark Bourbon, one ounce of strawberry puree, a half an ounce of lemon juice, and a half an ounce of maple syrup. The soda is just a top off after the drink has been made, so the amount is up to you.
  3. Select a glass. The Kentucky Kiss cocktail is traditionally served in a cocktail glass. Most recipes call for the cocktail glass to be chilled before the drink is served, so make sure you remember to stick a glass in the freezer.
  4. Mix it up. To make the Kentucky Kiss cocktail pour all ingredients together and shake until you are satisfied with the mix. Then strain the mix into the chilled cocktail glass and add the soda as a top if you want.
  5. Garnish and enjoy. Garnish the drink with a strawberry and enjoy!
