Hillview School Spelling Bee
Tuesday, January 22, during 7th period. Hillview's annual School Spelling Bee is associated with the Scripps National Spelling Bee. All interested students are invited to participate. The School Spelling Bee is a written format, double elimination. Some helpful study lists are attached here, however the study lists are NOT the same as the word list used in the competition. The study lists are designed to give sample words, spelling patterns, and sound patterns typical of the Scripps Spelling Bee words. Our School Spelling Bee determines a school champion who will compete in the online Regional Semi-Final Spelling Bee for a chance to compete in the Regional Final in San Francisco.

Wednesday, January 30, a morning session 9:00 -10:00 a.m. or an evening session 6:00 - 7:00 p.m., Hillview Room G4.  Willy Haug, Principal of Hillview, invites parents to participate in a visioning session. We will ask you to share with us the qualities, skills, attitudes, and dispositions that you would most like to see your students develop in their middle-school years. This is part of our effort to define a Hillview graduate  profile . This profile will serve as a lens for the environment and experiences we intentionally create in the future. We will look to staff, parents, and students to envision a Hillview graduate. Consider joining our School Site Council meeting. RSVP through the Google form here.

8th-Grade Parent Information
Yearbook Baby Pictures and Yearbook Ad
Wednesday, February 27 is the final deadline for 8th-grade parents to submit a baby picture to the yearbook. You may also choose to participate in a paid yearbook ad. See attached flyer  here   for more information or email here .

Graduation Party
The celebration party follows the 8th-grade graduation on Friday, June 14. It is a memorable event for all 8th-grade students. The party is 100% funded and planned by 8th-grade families and is not a PTO-sponsored event. We ask for a contribution of $50 per 8th-grade student. We also also ask you to consider donating to the scholarship fund to support additional students and to ensure that all costs are covered. All 8th-grade students are welcome regardless of donation. To make your donation now, go to the Hillview website  here. If you are interested in  sponsoring any portion of the party (such as the DJ), your support would be greatly appreciated. Contact Joel Rutsky  here  with any questions.

Hillview Nominating Committee Members Needed!
This five-person committee will work together to find parents who would like to serve on the Hillview PTO Board for the 2019-20 school year. The goal of the nominating committee as described here is to help ensure that the Board is balanced geographically and to get new people involved. The group will meet each other in February and then can work independently and communicate as a group as they decide. The 2019-20 slate will be presented to the current Board in the spring of 2019. Contact Gina Skinner here if you are interested in serving on this fun committee!

New Year Message from The LunchMaster
Place your hot lunch orders for January! Visit here to order today.

Did you set New Year's resolutions for 2019? Here are some simple strategies on improving your success in achieving your goals. Make your goals specific and measurable, for example, instead of planning to exercise this year, aim to go to a gym class three days a week for at least thirty minutes. Share your goals with your friends and family. Getting them involved will help keep you accountable. Why not invite them to work out with you? Make sure to track your successes and customize them as needed. Small, incremental actions have a greater chance of creating healthy, long-lasting change.

A Note from the Nurse
Many students become sick throughout the school year, and it is important that we work together to help prevent the spread of illnesses to other students. We would like to remind parents that if your student has a confirmed case of a communicable disease (e.g., pink eye, mononucleosis, influenza, etc.), you must provide the school with a doctor's note, and your student must stay at home until your student meets the readmission criteria for that disease. Thank you and stay healthy!
