Dear SMA Families and Friends:

It has been another great week at SMA! The administrative team and the wonderful instructional staff continues to work diligently in order to provide our cadets with the best education. TEACHER SPOTLIGHT
SMA-CPT HARVEY
IB FILM AND MEDIA CENTER

SMA-CPT Harvey is from our northern counterpart, OH CANADA, where she graduated from the University of Toronto. She has entered into her 4 th decade of teaching and it is apparent that she has always wanted to be a teacher. It just runs in the family! Her mother taught elementary school in Europe and inspired her to be the amazing teacher she is today. Over the years, SMA-CPT Harvey has raised an astounding $40,000+ in grants and fundraisers for the schools she has worked in throughout the years. WOW!!!

SMA-CPT Harvey was an essential part of designing and building the library at Booker High School where she worked before coming over to SMA 6 years ago. Since taking over the Media Center, she has transformed our library into such a cozy and functional work space, and a place where students want to read. She is also responsible for starting the SMA Film Club. In 2018, SMA held their first film festival thanks to SMA-CPT Harvey and SMA entered their first film into the Sarasota Film Festival. What an amazing opportunity and experience she has created for our cadets who are interested in this area of study!

A few things you may not have known about SMA-CPT Harvey is that she played volleyball and coached a bit as well in Canada. Also, she performed in a lip sync event at school as Madonna! You’re welcome for that image. SMA-CPT Harvey , do you have any pictures?! I think we all need to see that!

THANK YOU FOR HELPING OUR STUDENTS STRIVE
TO REACH THEIR POTENTIAL AND BEYOND!

THANK YOU FOR CREATING A WELCOMING AND SAFE LIBRARY
FOR OUR CADETS, AS WELL AS,
ALL THE RESOURCES YOU SHARE WITH THE TEACHERS.

SMA IS LUCKY TO HAVE YOU!!!

DRILL TEAM

Great day for a Drill meet, (Yeah)! The Drill Team hosted the 3rd Annual Sergeant Major Dennis Richardson Drill Meet at Booker High School, on January 12, 2019. The kick off began with honor to our nation, the National Anthem was sung by Cadet Kaylah Norville. She was followed by the Mighty SMA Drum line, whose performance roused the crowd, and lifted their early morning spirits. Under the direction of SMA-MAJ Michael Finley, the drum line had us all fired up and ready to take the field.

The competition was fierce, with SMA Prep and a pool of 23 high schools from across the middle of the state, we battled until 1700 Saturday afternoon. With the assistance of SMA-CPTs Holland and Chipman, the results were tabulated rapidly. Math Department, Hooah! Thanks Booker High School JROTC, Maintenance, and Grounds crew for partnering with us in putting together a first class event. Our Head of School and his wife spent the day with us and had the opportunity to observe JROTC greatness. We would like to thank Mr. Steven Hall. the PTCC, Coaches, Drill Team members and other staff and faculty that supported our awesome event. The next Drill Meet is this Saturday, January 19th, at Brandon High School. In closing, we would like to thank the parents for spending a long day with us. See you Saturday!
