Jefferson St. Farmers Market Begins Season
The region's favorite market returns to the 300-500 blocks of Jefferson every Thursday! It's a great opportunity to get fresh produce and baked goods, pick up flowers and crafts, sample some delicious food, and hear free family entertainment in the heart of a great downtown. The market hours are 4:30 to 7:30 PM. The Jefferson St. Farmers Market is organized by Downtown Partners and made possible by Two Rivers Bank & Trust.

Downtown Partners and Bike Burlington invite you to kick off the summer with the 36th Annual Snake Alley Criterium on Memorial Day weekend. The excitement begins on Friday afternoon, May 25, with the Burlington Road Race, 104 miles from the Port of Burlington to Grandview and back, ending on Main St. for the sprint to the finish line. Afterwards, join in the fun with live music and refreshments during Friday Fest at the Port.
Criterium Day, Saturday, May 26, begins with delicious food at the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast at the Port. The Criterium races begin at 8:30 AM downtown, with the final Category 1/2/Pro race at 3:40 PM. Hundreds of athletes from around the country will be competing for thousands of dollars in prizes. The popular kids' races and the Cobble Climb take place at noon. Spend your day cheering on the racers as they make their way up the grueling 12.5 percent grade of Snake Alley, with spectators literally in the middle of the action. Be sure to visit our downtown shops and restaurants and check out the food vendors, too.

The Downtown Partners Design Committee is again seeking creative entries for the popular "County Seat Project" to decorate wooden benches. The committee will pick the best designs, and the winning entrants will paint the benches. Applications may be downloaded

Special Microenterprise Assistance Program
Burlington has been selected by the Iowa Economic Development Authority as a pilot community for a new program to assist "microenterprises" - businesses with 5 or fewer FTE employees. To qualify, the owner must be low to moderate income or create an FTE position that will be filled by a low to moderate income employee. Eligible expenses include equipment, inventory, supplies, working capital, and job training (no building improvements). The assistance, with a minimum of $5000, would be in the form of a forgivable loan, which is forgiven (i.e., becomes an outright grant) if the business is still in operation two years later. There would be a 15% required match.
This program would be conducted through the City and would not necessarily be limited to downtown - but we think downtown businesses would definitely benefit! The business must be for-profit and located in the Burlington city limits. If you are interested and think your business might qualify, please contact Steve Frevert. The City needs to gauge interest in the program before they commit to accepting the $125,000 in funding. Please think about how this funding could help your business!

We'll be meeting in the rear of Nancy Neafie Park. This is a quick volunteer activity - no skills needed, just bring a hand trowel.
