Assistance for the Furloughed

Dear Holy Comforter family,

During the government shutdown we have at least two families associated with our congregation and the preschool who are struggling to make ends meet -- for mortgages, utilities, and food. Our preschool is currently offering free tuition for them. If you would like to provide some support for these families, please make a check to the Rector's Discretionary Fund and in the memo line put "Furlough Assist."

With Care,

Jon+
Our Lenten Journey Together
This year for Lent, we will once again offer a series of daily Lenten devotions written and created by members of Holy Comforter. These reflections are paired with the weekday readings from the Daily Office, and Sunday and Feast Day readings from the Eucharistic Lectionary designated for the forty days of Lent, Palm Sunday, Holy Week, and Easter Day. You may submit an original drawing, a poem, a piece of writing, or a non-copyrighted image that expresses your response to the scripture for that day. The sheets of readings and instructions are available in the narthex. Please sign your name on the signup sheet at the date you have chosen, and take the corresponding dated sheet. The deadline for submission by email is Friday, February 8. If you are unable to pick up a sheet in person, please contact Lolly Mixter and she will send one to you.

Relationship Recovery Group

Are you a woman in a separation process or divorce process now? Or have you just gone through one, or are you struggling to recover from one in the past? You are invited to a Relationship Recovery Group, which is a wellness support group at Holy Comforter. We will gather starting on January 20 to share and process the many complexities of this transition and discover tools for recovery. The group will be intentionally safe and confidential, with access to more resources as needed or wanted. Please plan to bring your brown bag lunch for 12:30 to 1 p.m., then we will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. A men's divorce support group is in the planning process. Questions? Please contact Alexandra MacCracken, Gestalt Pastoral Care Minister and Healing Team Leader.

"The heavens declare the glory of God!"- Psalm 19
Lunar Eclipse Party
This Sunday, January 20
and Monday, January 21

Come join the Rector and share hot chocolate and/or tea, and enjoy telescopic or naked-eye views of the full lunar eclipse the night of Sunday, January 20 and early morning, Monday, January 21. We will gather at the start of the partial eclipse at 10:33 p.m. and conclude sometime around 1:00 a.m. Join us anytime. We will gather in the narthex and have scopes set up in the circle drive in front of Holy Comforter. Learn more HERE.

Note: With the weather forecast being bitterly cold (below 10 degrees) and very windy (20-30 mph) there will be no official "party" but the Rector will likely be at church for a while, with a scope if it isn't too cloudy -- between 10:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. If we're lucky there will be a few good photos!

Pennywise Thrift Shop
Pennywise Thrift Shop
Pennywise Thrift Shop
A Ministry of Church of the Holy Comforter
Located at 144 Church St. NE, Vienna, VA
In 1961, a group of parishioners, led by Lillian Croy, wanted to expand the Holy Comforter ministry programs. With hard work, they started Pennywise, a thrift shop operated entirely by volunteers from Holy Comforter, as a program in ECW (Episcopal Church Women). Pennywise was first located on Main Street in Vienna but moved to Bouton Hall (the Mason's building) a few years later. It has been there ever since. Now almost 60 years later, Pennywise generates thousands of dollars a year to support a wide variety of charitable organizations in our Diocese and around the world. The shop continues to be entirely supported by volunteers!
