Finn Baldwin's Internship
On the first day of my internship at Misiaszek Turpin in Laconia, I was greeted by Jared, one of the workers. It was great to get a run through of what they did there and what it would be like. I produced some handwritten drawings of interior designs for the tiny home that HUOT will make on my first day. They helped me figure out the best way to go about spacing rooms from each other and showed me examples that they had done. Over the next few Mondays, I kept working on this, but also started to work in Sketchup making 3D designs that we could scale. They helped me use the program. A few weeks later we went to the HUOT to see the individuals that will be designing the home. They told us what they usually do and what could be changed or done differently. I brought my notebook and took notes so that I could incorporate the ideas in my design. After that, I worked on a design that had a loft in it and one that did not. I started to make individual rooms and placement utilizing all of the space I had to work with. On another day, I went with one of the students to gather measurements on a house that they were working on so that I could see the procedure that they use when working on a house.
The internship was very productive because it let me decide whether or not I could actually see myself as an architect. It showed me what it would take to work on a real house. I learned so many skills that I never knew I had. I am happy I had the chance to work with this architecture firm. They took me in like I had been working there for a while and taught me along the way.
A special thanks to Sonya, Robert, Jared, and Claire of Misiaszek Turpin for partnering with Gilford High School.
