Pride in Performance Winners Announced
East Campus recipients for the second grading period will be featured in the next edition.
Congratulations to the West Campus recipients:
Academics: Aayush Patel's presence in Youth and Government has been strong for the last four years. He sets an example for other members by working hard, holding himself accountable, and having a great work ethic. Aayush is also commended for being a straight "A" student at Lake Park.
Activities: Anya Choksi has worked very diligently to ensure Interact Club meets its goals. She can always be counted on to proudly represent the organization and has successfully been able to do so at DuKane Conference events and CGTI retreats. Her positive energy and enthusiasm constantly inspires others and helps to make Lake Park a better place to be.
Athletics: Darrione Rogers has proven to be one of the best basketball players in the state of Illinois. During her junior year to date, she is averaging 27.5 points per game with game highs of 38, 40, 46 and 49 points and has an average of 9.9 rebounds per game. She has led the varsity team to its current impressive record as well as tournament championships at the Hoffman Estates Pilgrim Classic and the St. Viator Blenner Classic. Darrione has verbally committed to play Division I basketball at DePaul University.

An Open Letter to Parents
Joint letter addresses expectations about sportsmanship.
I am sharing an
open letter from Karissa Niehoff, Executive Director of the National Federation of High School Associations, and Craig Anderson, Executive Director of the Illinois High School Association. I urge you to read the letter as it seeks to address a growing concern at high school athletic events: crowd behavior and the impact on student-athletes and officials. We all love to support our Lancers and genuinely feel like that support can help cheer our teams to victory. There is nothing more fun than when our stadium or gymnasiums are full of fans with the pep band and rocking, but there has to be a basic atmosphere of sportsmanship and respect. As this
open letter points out, negative behaviors by fans are having a direct and damaging impact on high school sports because fewer and fewer people are choosing to become licensed officials. In the very near future we could be confronted with having to drastically change the way high school sports are scheduled due to this increasingly shrinking pool of officials.
On behalf of the student-athletes and coaches of Lake Park High School, I ask you to remember a few simple rules of good sportsmanship when attending our games: positively cheer for our team and not negat
i
vely against the team. It is never appropriate to single out an opposing player by name or uniform nu
mber and subject him or her to personal verbal abuse. Remember, every player on the court or the field is a student and someone's child. Do not interact with the opposing team's fans, even if you do not agree with their cheers or behavior. Inappropriate language is never acceptable. Language that is not appropriate during the regular school day is not appropriate at a school sponsored athletic event. This is true for students and adults.
When it comes to officials, they are always deserving of respect. We all should remember that the men and women who choose to be officials are doing so out of a love for the game and not great financial gain. They are not full-time professionals as seen on TV, but often our neighbors, accountants, teachers, and members of our community. Theirs is a difficult job that plays out in front of hundreds of people, ofte
n in a charged, emotional atmosphere. While they may sometimes make mistakes, they get the majority of the calls correct. Officials are partners with high schools, and we could not offer comprehensive athletic programs without them. I urge you to please remember this the next time you feel like verbally abusing an official. I would also urge you to consider becoming an official yourself if you enjoy sports and want to get inv
olved.
Finally, the next time you visit the East or West Campus main gym, I invite you to take a moment and read the banners that are displayed and ask that we all commit to meeting the expectations.

SAT Test Prep Course
Final opportunity to register is January 23.
In preparation for the SAT test dates available this spring for juniors, Kaplan Test Prep will begin offering a course in February 2019 to develop the study skills to improve SAT scores.
Hosted on Wednesday evenings and some Saturday mornings, the program provides 18 hours of in-class instruction. Registration is $400 and will be accepted through the
Wedneday, January 23 deadline.

With four in-class tests and six additional timed online tests, students have access to more test-like practice prior to the SAT on
Tuesday, April 9. The easy-to-read score reports will help students understand their strengths and areas for improvement.

Depression, anxiety and suicide rates among school aged children continue to rise; in fact, there is a startling increase in anxiety and major depression among children and teens in the U.S. According to the CDC, suicide is the leading cause of death among youth ages 10-24. Anxiety disorders affect more than one out of four kids and teens, and they often co-occur with depression, eating disorders and ADHD. Despite the rise in depression and anxiety, there has not been a corresponding increase in mental health treatment.
Dr. Aimee will discuss ways to reduce the impact of stress on ourselves and our families. She will explore awareness of the present moment and how to be less susceptible to negative outside influences.
Medinah Elementary School District 11 will also welcome Dr. Aimee on Thursday, January 24 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Medinah Intermediate School, 7N330 Medinah Rd. Her topic centers on the practice of "Mindfulness" to be more aware, present, focused and accepting of yourself and others.

LPEF to Award 31 Scholarships
Over $25,000 available to qualifying Lancers.
The
Lake Park Educational Foundation is pleased to announce the availability of 31 scholarships totaling over $25,000 that are available for Lake Park High School seniors in the Class of 2019.
Students must submit a completed common scholarship application, essay(s), and appropriate supporting materials for each scholarship. Scholarship applications are due to the Career Center at Lake Park West Campus by
Friday, March 8 (
note: the deadline for the Scott Bradley memorial Scholarship is

Roselle Rose Queen Scholarship
Submit an application by the January 24 deadline.
The Rose Queen Scholarship program offers local high school women an opportunity to compete annually for college scholarships totaling over $4,000.
The event consists of judging in five areas: personal interview with the judges prior to the event, sportswear, talent, formal wear, and a Q&A opportunity.
Joie Allen, a 2018 Lake Park High School graduate, was crowned last year and represented the Village of Roselle at the annual Rose Parade, the annual Celebrate the Season and Cocoa Crawl, and other special events during her reign.
Applications are available for download and due by Thursday, January 24.

Flags for Roselle
Subscription service returns with five holidays in 2019.
Residents of Roselle can purchase a $50 annual subscription to have a 3x5-foot American flag installed in their front yard during five holidays this year: Memorial Day, May 27; Flag Day, June 14; Independence Day, July 4; Patriots Day, September 11; and Veterans' Day, November 11.
This unique community activity represents the collaborative effort of the Roselle History Museum, the Roselle American Legion Post 1084, Lake Park High School and the Boy and Girl Scouts of Roselle with support from the Village of Roselle. Students and volunteers will install the flags early in the morning and remove them at dusk the same day.
